  1. Beautiful piece. Athena’s right on the money for the atmosphere of it. Not only that, she’s showing a precocious amount of her daddy’s wordsmithery capabilities in that bit of off-the-cuff descriptive phrasing. You’ll wanna be writing that stuff down for posterity, dude. She’s got the chops to be a Pulitzer writer some day and daddy might need something he can offer on eBay Interplanetary to pay for nursing home upgrades.

  3. Listening to Petra Haden cover The Who Sell Out acapella-style on Weekend Edition Sunday this morning was surreal. What a bizarre (and dated) album for her to choose to cover that way!

  4. John, what do you do to your pictures to get that nice silver tone? Photoshop, I assume, but is there a particular filter? It’s a good picture.

  6. Kevin: Thanks. It’s not any particular filter. What I do is turn the picture black and white, copy the picture onto another later, use the guassian blur, and then fade back the blur to about 30% — that evens out the tone (and gives it that “silvery” look). For edge definition, I’ll do a “photocopy” layer and then fade it back to about 10% or so.

Well, that’s what I’m doing here!

  7. I’m a big fan of both Bill Frisell and the orginal composition. He did a nice instrumental with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones here . No sample of Moon River unfortuneately, you’ll have to buy the record or listen on Rhapsody.

    P.S. That quote is haunting

  8. Too poignant.

It’s a very nice tune. I didn’t think of it as sad, but I can understand that interpretation.

If anyone is interested in indie music I’ve found that The Arcade Fire’s (www.arcadefire.com) Funeral CD is something I can’t seem to listen to enough.

    They’ve really got something.

  10. Hey John I think I remember that bear, wasn’t it yours from when you were a lil kid? Athena is adorable…of course.

  11. Ahh, music… the moodier the better. Music – classical music especially – is the best inspirational force for the writer to extract creative energies from… bar none! Music… okay, enough sentences beginning with the word “music”, lest this is mistaken for an excerpt of the lyrics to that insufferable Veronica Electronica aka Esther aka y’know-who’s equally insufferable song…

This is the place where you leave the things you think
