Mmmmm… ARCy Goodness.

My reward for signing a big ol’ stack of Ghost Brigades for the fine booksellers of Northern California: an ARC of Dan Simmons’ new book The Terror.

I mention this for the sole purpose of inspiring insane jealousy in at least a couple of people who I know read the Whatever. Because I am a sad and petty little man, that’s why. Oh, yes.

  1. A nAw Dan Simmons!!! You are not so much petty as cruel. Damn you to hell Scalzi and your little dog too.

  2. I, sir, am going to take the high road and congratulate you on your good fortune, wishing you the greatest reading pleasure and….

    DAMN. CAN’T. DO. IT.

  4. Oh, by the way — in case you haven’t seen it yet, there’s an In-N-Out right near the Oakland airport. Or, if you have a car, you can drive up to Pinole, where the In-N-Out has a view of the Bay.

  6. After _Olympos_, you couldn’t pay me to read any more Dan Simmons.

No offense, and I hope you enjoy the book.

  7. I’ve read just about every book written by Dan Simmons, and have enjoyed most of them. However, I hate to say, if “The Terror” has cyborgs who, because of their basic programming, obsess over, and quote ad nauseum, French philosophers (I’m right there with you Dan M.), I may pass.

If it’s got 9 foot tall beings who can travel through time and look like the Tin Man’s razor wire cousin- I’m there.

This is where an editor is pivotal. Such as, I’ve really enjoyed Peter Jackson’s work before and especially including “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Treebeard’s endless poem in “The Two Towers” or the 5 minutes of skulls falling on our intrepid heroes in “Return of the King?” Kong and Anne Darrow pulling a Bambi and Thumper on ice routine in Central Park? Someone needed to take him aside and let him know when enough was enough.

I just finished E. L. Doctorow’s “The March,” and the economy of his writing blows me away.

B*tching aside, I’ll read “The Terror.” But obviously at a date much later than our esteemed Mr. Scalzi.

  8. Nothing is inspiring jealousy in me at the moment as I spent the night in a hotel room with a flat screen in the bathroom mirror. There’s some odd symmetry in atching TV on the crapper.

This is the place where you leave the things you think
