Chris, some at Marvel share your regard of Mark Gruenwald's work in comics. Walt Simonson used Gruenwald's likeness during his short run on the Fantastic Four for a person in charge at an authority created to monitor and to correct "continuity errors". Recently, this character (or someone very much like him) showed up in Dan Slott's run on "She-Hulk".

It's a mixed legacy that Gruenwald left, isn't it?

I never read Squadron Supreme -- although now I may need to track it down -- but I really enjoyed DP.7 and Gruenwald's stint with Captain America. I still have my complete set of "The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe" that I bought month at a time when it first came out. I loved the attention to detail and semi-rational explanations for super-heroes, powers, and Norse gods. Frankly, the artwork was pretty good too -- much better than the super-exaggerated, overly sexualized style that caught on a decade later.

However, the excessive cross-overs, tie-ins, and monkeying about with continuity (and the steeply rising costs of the comics themselves) drove me out of the hobby. Why should there be six X-men comics each month? Why are we rebooting the Marvel universe again? Why is this story continued in two other comics this same month?

If Gruenwald is to be blamed for the current state of affairs, then I think that's a sad legacy.
