Oh wow. I’m expecting my daughter to be born sometime in the next 2 or 3 days. If I can be half as cool a dad as you are John I think my daughter has some chance to become as awesome as Athena. Congratulations on such a great kid.

  3. Mike Woodhouse says:

Ah, teh skullcrushaz. Never gets old. Hope my daughter has such good taste when she’s 12. Guess we’ll find out next April.

Thanks for sharing, my kids loved it. Perfect background to the holiday cookie making.

  12. Greg says:

well, its nice to see that even with the very public life that comes from having an author for a dad and being the subject of his blog posts now and then, Athena is turning out to be such a well adjusted kid that she would want a monkey-pony like any other 12 year old.

  13. Joyce says:

Thank you, Athena and have a wonderful birthday!

  14. Jody says:

Did you make her a half-pony-half-monkey monster?

  15. John Scalzi says:

I encouraged her to make one herself!

  16. Justme says:

Happy Birthday, Athena! And remember, you can be your own evil genius!

    Happy Birthday Young Lady,

I hope your old man has given you an a massive Evil Genius worthy haul of birthday lootz, also excellent song choice.

    Kind Regards,

Oh My God That Is One Of My Absolute Favorite Songs! You tell me when Athena, I have four kids just waiting to be loyal henchmen.

  19. Jennifer R. Ewing says:

Yeah, what #15 said. Who says the man has to be the evil genius all the time?

    :-D

  20. Teresa says:

    Happy birthday Athena! :)

And John, I hate to break it to you, but your daughter’s way cooler than you. She’s the only reason I even READ this blog. You can tell her I said that.

  21. Steve Halter says:

    Excellent. Great birthday song.

This reminds me of my 4 year old niece.

  25. Shirley says:

Wow – you have the coolest kid since … well, mine.

    Happy Birthday Athena!

  26. Your daughter has excellent musical taste, John.

The fact that it parallels that of my own children is completely immaterial.

    Many happy returns, Athena!

  27. Hilary says:

Excellent! Don’t all the best super villains come from Ohio?

  28. Annalee says:

    Happy birthday, Athena!

  33. mythago says:

    Happy birthday, Athena!

  34. beth says:

My twelve year old prefers the spiffworld video for that song, but then he’s a Warcraft player. He’s also been twelve for MONTHS now, so he’s much older. Happy birthday Athena!

  35. Sihaya says:

    Happy birthday, Athena.

  36. Alan Kellogg says:

With just one song Athena proves conclusively why 12 year olds need constant supervision. Just wait until she’s 13.

  37. Bob says:

    Happy Birthday, Athena!

  38. MarkHB says:

The kid’s all right. Shitfire, I really need to reinstall Left4Dead2. Been ages since I’ve had her headshot a Spitter off my silly, slow-reloading ass.

Happy birthday, Athena! May you continue towards your inevitable role as Empress of the known universe, and may death come swiftly to your enemies on that day.

And here I figured that would take, oh, 20-30 years to happen. Holy cats, between the secret lair, the henchmen, and the half-monkey half-pony, she is NOT wasting any time!

  40. turtlesong says:

hope you had a wonderful birthday, athena. :)

  41. vian says:

Wow – what’s the odds? This is the second year Athena’s birthday has been on exactly the same day as my sisters! Co-incidence that two lovely women were born on the same day> I think not! Many happy returns!

  42. Omri says:

    Happy birthday, Athena!

  43. Andrea says:

    Happy birthday Athena!

  44. John Kerr says:

Great taste Athena, thanks for sharing. Have to say that Mr JoCo gets even smarter both musically and lyrically with every single song I hear.

  45. Kat Howard says:

Happy Birthday, Athena! Any young woman cool enough to pick Skullcrusher Mountain as her birthday song is going to do just fine.

  46. Jponathan Stein says:

That’s too funny! Reminds me a little of my youngest brother’s oldest daughrter (she’s 10). She has already read Old Man’s War, and I’m still laughing about her comment abpout the “Consu”. She told me she thought they probably looked sort of like giant lobsters, and wondered if a little butter would make them tastier. As another friend of mine once said: “We have met the enemy…and he was delicious!”

  47. Beth says:

She sounds like she would get along with my daughter famously. At 5-6 she went on a Balrog kick and drew them constantly. Sometimes they wore crowns, sometimes they were pink. These days she plots to take over the world with eloborate schemes and sharks us in any game she can. She told me once that she loves playing with her dad’s friends as some of them still think she innocent.

Happy Belated Birthday, Athena, and here’s to strong willed young women!

This is the place where you leave the things you think
