Also, Damn

I have completed and have had published (or definitively have had scheduled for publication) 16 books since November, 2000. This doesn’t include METAtropolis (which I edited and wrote one fifth of), The God Engines and The Sagan Diary; if you include them because they are stand-alone projects, it’s 19. That’s, you know. Not bad for a dozen years’ worth of work. And only one of them out of print! Which is even better.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: I like that I get to be what I wanted to be when I grew up. I’ll keep doing this as long as I can.

    That’s great! Congratulations!

    Now write some more… ;)

  2. JulieB says:

    That’s some heavy-duty writing! :)

  3. Karen R says:

So I guess that means….YOU THE MAN!!!!! And I am so entirely jealous, I cannot even get my first book finished or find a co writer as it needs two writers or even get a synopsis done as I don’t write that way, things just happen as I go and sometimes…it even suprises me.
Congradulations! Cyber champagne and cyber cigars are on me today.

  4. KSB says:

Is it fair to say that the one title that’s out of print probably should be out of print? Which isn’t to say that the work wasn’t worthwhile, but only that it was a book doomed to have a limited shelf life, given the subject matter. You’d need to be making regular updates and revisions to subsequent printings, right? At some point, it would become essentially a new book.

  5. John Scalzi says:

    KSB:

Oh, that book is righteously out of print. There’s almost nothing in it that is useful or accurate anymore, aside from some very general financial advice. If someone came to me and said “Hey, I just bought Rough Guide to Money Online!” my response would be, “Why on Earth did you do that?”

  6. Murfkat says:

    …wow…

    go you!

    *envious mode… ON*

    :-p

  7. Another Liz says:

“Why on Earth did you do that?” I would buy one for a penny just to have you sign it at a con.

  8. Chris Sears says:

@ Another Liz: You may have to hurry, or you will have to pay two cents for it on Amazon.

  9. Jeff S. says:

I was going to ask for a list since I couldn’t remember them all. Then I realized, “stupid man” there is a link on the side bar that says “books by John Scalzi” I don’t feel quite as dumb now but I kept getting 17 instead of 16. So I think you should go ahead and count The God Engines, as I did. I think it deserves it and I’m counting it anyway…

Flukes tend to even or cancel themselves out over time. With this longevity, you must be doing something right.

  11. Mike Fullerton says:

Nicely done sir. Fyi, you top my list of recommended authors. Old Man’s War always delivers for grizzled sci-fi veterans and newbies. Looking forward to the 12 years. :-)

  12. hugh57 says:

Probably only a true John Scalzi completist would want to buy a copy of The Rough Guide to Money Online. But like Another Liz, I would buy it if I saw it cheap at a used book store or yard sale, partly to have you sign it at a con, and partly out of nostalgia. It would be nice to revisit the days when people actually had money to invest, online or off.

Keeping in mind, of course, that it is also The Book of Broken URLs.:-)

  13. Carina says:

    A truely heartfelt gratz.

Here’s to many more books, too!

  14. WizarDru says:

I wanted to be Spiderman when I grew up. Still working on that one.

  15. Matthew in Austin says:

If I do the math right, all of your books are from 2003 and on except the Rough Guide to Money. So you could say 18 books in 8 years with none out of print to increase your relative badassity.

  16. vaughn potter says:

That really is quite awesome. Made more so by your recognition and appreciation thereof.

May you have a long life filled with that and many more blessings.

This is the place where you leave the things you think
