And Now, Wil Wheaton Losing His Mind as the Kings Win the Stanley Cup

Because he’s just that excited.¬†And speaking as a man who owns a Kings jersey of his own (albeit from the Gretzky era), I can’t say that I am displeased, either.

Fun fact: The other fellow briefly seen in the video is our mutual friend Mykal Burns, who, aside from having been a guest blogger here a couple of years ago, is one of my oldest friends in the world, having known me since junior high. Hi, Mike!

  1. You own a sports jersey? You, who do reportedly did not worship at the shrine of organized pro sports?

  2. Shrike:

I actually have two. And I don’t worship pro sports; I’ve been a Kings fan since I was a kid because I thought it was funny that LA, one of America’s warmest cities, has a hockey team. This was admittedly more amusing when LA was one of the few warm-weather cities with a hockey team; these days it’s less notable.

The other jersey is from an Aussie football team, sponsored by “Scalzi Produce.”

  3. Couldn’t notice anything special about Wil in this video….. Isn’t he always like that?

  4. Further credits: The kazoo player was Anne Wheaton. The woman visible in the video is their friend Stephanie, who introduced Wil and Anne in the first place.

  5. I’m just surprised that he wasn’t at Staples Center attending the game, and losing his mind with about 20,000 other hockey geeks.

  6. The previous time the Kings made the finals (1993), I was in high school in Los Angeles, and despite that they got curb-stomped by the Canadiens, I still have fond memories of watching all the games on my parents’ TV.

I’m pleased that they won this time.

  7. Thanks for the video. I’m a Bruins fan who’s married to a Rangers fan, and we’ve found Wil’s hockey tweets greatly entertaining. Between him & one of our other friends, we didn’t need to actually watch the game to know what was going on.

  8. @Zack

Fun fact: as a college freshman, I listened to the ’92-’93 Kings season regularly as I drove pizza deliveries. That was the last time I seriously followed hockey. Good times, though.

  9. I was cheering for the Kings after they beat Phoenix. I have no respect for that team’s management/etc since they freaked out over the possibility of the team moving back to Winnipeg.

  10. If you think the video was good, you should’ve seen it live. Whoa.

Yup, that’s me (briefly) in the purple Kings jersey. Though my reaction was slightly more subdued than Wil’s, I think I may have gotten something in my eye. I’ve been a fan for 25+ years, and so happy to have the Cup in L.A.

  11. I really wanted the Devils to win but with so any team members from my area of Ontario (Kitchener/Waterloo) it didn’t really matter. I was ok with the Kings winning since they have never won the Cup.

  12. That was Grade A, Genuine Grass-Fed Kobe Beef, Iron Chef-quality freakout. “The Final Countdown” on the kazoo was the perfect touch.

  13. I’m just impressed that Wil has a vintage Rogie Vachon jersey. That’s the mark of a hard-core Kings fan. (My own jersey, like Mr. Scalzi’s, dates back to the Gretzky era, and was in fact purchased during their ill-fated 1993 Cup run, when the old Slap Shop in Westchester was selling Kings gear at steep discounts.)
