So, the question is, are the numbers pumped by having international readers buy US hardcovers? If so, congratulations on successfully gaming the system to get the bump that being on the bestseller list will give you.
Will you be able to put a bestseller stamp on the international releases?
Nobody knows everything about the inputs to the Times list. And they change their formula constantly, too.
We know some of the retailers that report and some of the online stores they obvious take into account, but nobody outside the Times ever has the whole recipe.

BAD AND WRONG WITH EXTRA WRONGNESS, THE KIND OF WRONGNESS THAT MAKES MARK WEEP WHEN WRITTEN ABOUT IN AN EXTENDED RUN-ON SENTENCE THAT REQUIRES PATRICK NIELSEN-HAYDEN TO POUND OUT A LONG COMMENT EXPLAINING BASIC ECONOMICS TO RANDOM INTERNET INHABITANTS WHO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HOW THE BRITISH WON WORLD WAR II AT LEAST ACCORDING TO MAGGIE THATCHER.

I assume that this counts e-books too as well as physical books. Hardcover ebooks just sounds weird.

If you hadn’t done such a good job of getting our attention with your past work (and this blog), if you hadn’t lived up to our expectations with a great story… well, let’s just say that you seem to be following a lot of the (very good) writing advice you dispense here on Whatever. Woohoo! Congratulations again!
And yet my local Barnes & Noble didn’t have it. “We ordered two,” the lady at the information desk said. “But I don’t know when they’ll come in. You might call in about a week.” I had intended to buy two copies, both for Father’s Day (though one would be staying in my household). Now I’m ordering them from Amazon. I miss Borders. Also I had had thoughts of sneak-reading one of the copies. There’s plenty of time before Sunday. Now I will have to wait.

I bought mine at the reading. It was the first @scalzi I have bought in hardcover- there’s something about being a fan, and personal signings.
Amen to loving the codas. It had things that really worked about it without them, but this completes the work. Satisfying.

No, the Times has separate lists for hardcover, e-books, trade and mass market, as well as a combined list. If John says “hardcover”, that’s what it is. But I bet the e-book is doing damned well.
That would be a good bet.
I think “New York Times best-selling author John Scalzi” has a nice ring to it.

Miles: they have separate “COMBINED PRINT & E-BOOK FICTION” and “HARDCOVER FICTION” lists. Will be interesting to see which list or lists Redshirts is on.
@Bearpaw: John landed on the list two times previously, according to his bio — The Last Colony in 2008 and Fuzzy Nation in 2011.

Just finished Redshirts on audiobook. Loved it! Great job, sir and my compliments to Mr. Wheaton, both for his performance and his ironic presence.

Has someone pointed out the alternate solution to Anonawriter’s problem? If you have the power of life and death then you also have the power of afterlife. Just have the ghost of a dead character appear to describe how awesome heaven is and then the writer need not feel guilty about killing them.

Just finished Redshirts in a one-day, five-hour session. An incredibly funny romp that turned into deeply moving read almost without my noticing. Sneaky! The codas are absolutely wonderful. IMHO, your best book. Thank you!
Sorry that I can’t be at the Lansing signing on Monday due to unavoidable work conflicts. (I did recommend it to my English teacher nephew when I gave a Schuler books gift card for his birthday.) Here’s hoping it will be such a great experience that Tor routes you to Grand Rapids for the next book!
Just finished it – Got it for Father’s day. It’s amazing – my wife bought the last copy for sale at the chain store since it had already sold out at our local SF specialty bookstore.
