Redshirts #15 on NYT Hardcover Fiction List

Whoo Hoo!

That will be in the list that will come out June 24.

Needless to say, this does not suck.

And once again: thank you, folks. Seriously.

Comments

  1. Regina Franchi says:

    Congrats! That’s just effin’ COOL.

  2. Jason says:

    Congratulations! That’s pretty awesome.

So, the question is, are the numbers pumped by having international readers buy US hardcovers? If so, congratulations on successfully gaming the system to get the bump that being on the bestseller list will give you.

Will you be able to put a bestseller stamp on the international releases?

  3. Nobody knows everything about the inputs to the Times list. And they change their formula constantly, too.

We know some of the retailers that report and some of the online stores they obvious take into account, but nobody outside the Times ever has the whole recipe.

  4. David says:

YES BUT THE EBOOK IS NOT AVAILABLE IN GERMANY. THIS IS BAD AND WRONG. BAD AND WRONG WITH EXTRA WRONGNESS, THE KIND OF WRONGNESS THAT MAKES MARK WEEP WHEN WRITTEN ABOUT IN AN EXTENDED RUN-ON SENTENCE THAT REQUIRES PATRICK NIELSEN-HAYDEN TO POUND OUT A LONG COMMENT EXPLAINING BASIC ECONOMICS TO RANDOM INTERNET INHABITANTS WHO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HOW THE BRITISH WON WORLD WAR II AT LEAST ACCORDING TO MAGGIE THATCHER.

    BAD.

    (oh congratulations and nice work)

  5. Jason says:

@nph @scalzi: Whatever the reason, keep it up, it’s obviously working!

  6. Greg says:

Did anybody else read that as “HARDCORE FICTION LIST”?

  7. Miles Archer says:

I assume that this counts e-books too as well as physical books. Hardcover ebooks just sounds weird.

  8. Scott Sigler says:

    Great news, congrats!

  9. Amy says:

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!

  10. SMQ says:

You’re welcome; see you Monday in Lansing. ;-)

  11. Congratz! Decided to get the hardback today to go along with my *gulp* ebook edition. What can I say the allure of that red cover was too hard to resist.

  12. Great news. Congratulations!

  13. Congrats, John. Well earned.

  14. SorchaRei says:

Very very sincere congratulations! I loved the book, and am delighted that it is so successful.

  15. JJS says:

I just finished the novel today (not done with the codas yet). I think it deserves best-seller status. Keep up the good work.

  16. Ozzie says:

Congrats on another fantastic book! Glad to see talent+hardwork+dedication to a craft paying off! ….. (Probably not the socially graceful spot, but I never thought these threads would require a mallet.)

  17. ajinbc says:

I’m sure I’m not the only one here who had a feeling this was going to be a NYT bestseller. First week listed and you are at number 15. Only 14 more positions to go :) Congratulations.

  18. I see that David has a firm grasp of the dance cards around here.

  19. Audra says:

Hey, I bought one of those hardcovers! So, you’re quite welcome! Thanks for the great entertainment!

  20. BeVibe says:

John – I just finished the book & codas. Dammit man, you made me cry.

But seriously, congratulations! It couldn’t happen to a nicer, more deserving author!

  21. Scott Garner says:

Hey, thank YOU, John. If you hadn’t done such a good job of getting our attention with your past work (and this blog), if you hadn’t lived up to our expectations with a great story… well, let’s just say that you seem to be following a lot of the (very good) writing advice you dispense here on Whatever. I agree with the commenters who have pointed out that this is well-earned.

  22. No, thank YOU, John!

  23. Dwight from Houston says:

    There ya go.

  24. CLP says:

I finished it yesterday and very much enjoyed it. I will recommend it to my friends! Good work Scalzi and PNH.

  25. Cassandra says:

Read it today and absolutely loved the codas. I will be passing the word along and buying some copies for friends. Congratulations-it was a great read!
    Cassandra

  26. Ari B. says:

    Woohoo! Congratulations again!

  27. Jenny says:

And yet my local Barnes & Noble didn’t have it. “We ordered two,” the lady at the information desk said. “But I don’t know when they’ll come in. You might call in about a week.” I had intended to buy two copies, both for Father’s Day (though one would be staying in my household). Now I’m ordering them from Amazon. I miss Borders. Also I had had thoughts of sneak-reading one of the copies. There’s plenty of time before Sunday. Now I will have to wait.

  28. Heather Scalzi says:

Congrats John! Im super proud of you as always!

  29. Josh says:

Congrats, John! That’s awesome. My copy arrived yesterday, and I’m loving it so far.

  30. Joe Gordon says:

    Nice!

I bought mine at the reading. It was the first @scalzi I have bought in hardcover- there’s something about being a fan, and personal signings.

Amen to loving the codas. It had things that really worked about it without them, but this completes the work. Satisfying.

Does anyone else read @pnh as NPH and think of HIMYM or Doogie or the Emmys or Grammys or every other award show ever?

  31. Eve says:

Wow. And I haven’t even bought mine yet. I am waiting (impatiently) for your signing tomorrow at the Harvard Coop.

  32. Katherine says:

Glad I could contribute to the count with the first newly-released hardback I’ve bought in YEARS. It’s just the first in what I hope will become a vast collection of Scalzi books. Kudos!

  33. Kilroy says:

Do you have a position on reselling the hardcover books on sites like half dot com?

  34. Stan says:

Tangential but I also saw your face on NPR.org in a front page link to a review. Little boosts like that can help keep the ride going.

  35. Dirty Wizard Hunter says:

THIS could very well be the FIRST book I read on my NEW iPad. Yay me! I mean, yay Scalzi! Er, whatever . . .

  36. Anne says:

John – extra super way to go dude!

@joe gordon – Yes, I did the same thing reading @pnh as NPH.

  37. Theophylact says:

    Miles:

No, the Times has separate lists for hardcover, e-books, trade and mass market, as well as a combined list. If John says “hardcover”, that’s what it is. But I bet the e-book is doing damned well.

  38. That would be a good bet.

  39. Bearpaw says:

I think “New York Times best-selling author John Scalzi” has a nice ring to it.

Is this your first time on the list?

  40. schnauzer says:

Miles: they have separate “COMBINED PRINT & E-BOOK FICTION” and “HARDCOVER FICTION” lists. Will be interesting to see which list or lists Redshirts is on.

  41. @Bearpaw: John landed on the list two times previously, according to his bio — The Last Colony in 2008 and Fuzzy Nation in 2011.

  42. Tom N says:

Congrats, John! Well-deserved (and, yes, I have already read the book!).

  43. Monica McAbee says:

I bought 8 hardbacks! (For my library system.) They are all checked out, and we have a waiting list of Redshirt-reader-wannabes.

  44. Howard says:

Congrats! The copy for my son just arrived yesterday :)

  45. Bearpaw says:

    @ Bruce Diamond:

Thanks. Google’s feelings are now hurt, because it thought we were friends.

“All you had to do was ask, man.”

  46. Todd Stull says:

Congratulations. I don’t know much about this list. What does being so high imply about total sales, national recognition, or other variables?

  47. M.A. says:

@Greg: Yeah, me too. Glad I’m not the only one.

  48. Hey, Bearpaw, I’m sure the Googs understands. It was very helpful and supportive to me, even when I had that fling with Bing.

  49. Kelly Parks says:

Just finished Redshirts on audiobook. Loved it! Great job, sir and my compliments to Mr. Wheaton, both for his performance and his ironic presence.

    *spoiler alert*

Has someone pointed out the alternate solution to Anonawriter’s problem? If you have the power of life and death then you also have the power of afterlife. Just have the ghost of a dead character appear to describe how awesome heaven is and then the writer need not feel guilty about killing them.

  50. Rembrant says:

    Cool.

  51. Paul G says:

Well Done! Enjoyed the story, and found the codas incredible!

  52. Rick Krueger says:

Just finished Redshirts in a one-day, five-hour session. An incredibly funny romp that turned into deeply moving read almost without my noticing. Sneaky! The codas are absolutely wonderful. IMHO, your best book. Thank you!

Sorry that I can’t be at the Lansing signing on Monday due to unavoidable work conflicts. (I did recommend it to my English teacher nephew when I gave a Schuler books gift card for his birthday.) Here’s hoping it will be such a great experience that Tor routes you to Grand Rapids for the next book!

  53. John Thompson says:

Just finished it – Got it for Father’s day. It’s amazing – my wife bought the last copy for sale at the chain store since it had already sold out at our local SF specialty bookstore.

  54. Abi says:
