Portland! Brace Yourself, For I Shall Arrive! Tomorrow! 7pm! Powell’s in Beaverton!

Yes, Portland! I am returning on Tuesday, May 21st! To feast upon your Voodoo Donuts and other local comestibles! And to read, answer questions and sign books! Largely in that order!

You will find me at Powell’s Beaverton branch at 7pm! Please come and bring everyone you have ever met in your life. Because if I don’t get a good crowd, I’m not allowed to have any Voodoo Donuts. Voodoo Donuts are for closers, you see.

Tell me you’ll come. The donuts, they are calling.

  1. Glad you’re coming to town, but IMHO Voodoo Donuts is (are?) overrated. Saint Cupcake, on the other hand…

  2. As someone who lives in Middletown let me say, Vodoo Donutsare terrible. Never have hipsters make your food.

  3. It occurred to me that all this traveling to different cities for a day or two must be like going to Disney Land/World and only going to one shop, (maybe) catching sight of one Disney character, and riding a single ride. While wearing blinders.

You get a glimpse of the city, but miss the vast majority of it. Do you ever regret that you’ll not be able to stay for longer?

  4. If you don’t get any VooDoo donuts, grab some Blue Star donuts. They are better anyway. Also, head to Pok Pok for some Vietnamese fish sauce wings. You’ll thank me.

  5. :-( I’m prepping for a big event that starts Thursday; no time for a 4-hour round-trip to PDX. Why do so many of my fave authors do Powell’s when I’m crazy-busy?

  6. Oh the Pok Pok chicken wings. The very thought makes me smile!
I will endeavor to get to Beaverton tomorrow evening, traffic be damned.

  7. I too would vote for Saint Cupcake (especially the toasted coconut, pumpkin spice, and carrot cake varieties) over Voodoo Donut. But Saint Cupcake is only open during the day whereas Voodoo Donut is open ‘round the clock. So Voodoo has accessibility in its favor.

While the Beaverton Powell’s is perfect – right in my own backyard almost – I won’t be attending on Tuesday. I’m sure there will be a big turnout, though. Enjoy!

  8. Voodoo’s website says they make a Mexican Hot Chocolate doughnut. It might not be quite as evil as a churro doughnut, but it still sounds dangerous. And they also do special orders, in case you need to drop Scalzi into a rapid sugar coma.

  9. But if you want good food hit the downtown food carts. There’s a great Turkish cart down by the Fourth Avenue Building (FAB) I’m addicted to.

  10. I wish you were coming to the downtown Powell’s, rather than Beavertron – that’s about a 3-hour total commute (by public transportation) to come see you… :(

  11. On my one trip to Portland, Voodoo Donuts was one of my favorite stops. So I envy Scalzi scoring some for his event. But is there a particular Voodoo Donut that’s appropriate for a Scalzi reading?

  12. @Peter, given John’s admirable support for marriage equality (and equality generally), how about the Gay Bar?

  13. Thank you so much for mentioning Voodoo Doughnuts. We are going to be in Portland in October and now I know where to go.

  14. But John, what Coffee is for closers with awesome doughnuts? (not trying to start an offshoot troll war, just thanks for referencing the movie.)

  15. Thank you for a great visit, sorry it had to be out in tha Burbs and not in the middle of the action.
And since she didn’t get to say it at the event, my wife wanted to thank you for writing such human and humane characters.

  16. Well damn – for like the third year in a row, I’ve been unable to catch you here. And after famously calling you a jerk – and you patiently & thoughtfully writing about it – it would have been nice to buy you a beer or something. Maybe next time.

This is the place where you leave the things you think
