Some jerkwad is depositing several hundred comment spam messages a day on the Whatever, and I can’t run MTBlacklist because my friggin’ hosting service hasn’t updated its version of Perl since 1997. So I did the next best thing, which is to close comments on every entry except this month’s entries. So if you wanted to add a comment to something I said in July of 2003, it’s too late now. I will shortly be on MT 3.11, which should solve many of my comment spam problems (cross fingers), but until then, let’s just say that after about three weeks, I’m likely to close entries to comments. So if you’ve got something to say, say it early and often.
On a bright note, I also went through and deleted all the spam comments I could find. So the chances of you running across spam comments touting hot anal lesbian grandmas (or worse — not that there’s anything wrong with hot anal lesbian grandmas, if that’s what you are) is now dramatically lessened. And I think we’re all grateful for that. It does somewhat increase the likelihood that active comment threads will gather spam, but since I’ll actively police those, what spam does accrue will be quickly removed. As I said, it should allow me to hold the fort until my 3.11 installation.

I deal with this with my blog too, and I clearly get a lot less of a readership than you. I’ve got Blacklist installed, but the spammers still get through. I really want to find just one of these folks and take a baseball bat to various parts of their anatomy to let them know how annoying they are.

My Blacklist now has 2,430 entries, or something like that, and I still have to update it every day. It’s like policing the Mexican border; you can catch some, but not all.
I keep meaning to ask my technical advisor if you can, say, ban all URLs with .ru or .de in them. I don’t know any Russians or Germans, but they sure know how to send that spam.

I think it says a lot about your desire to be heard on the web to live without MT-Blacklist. I would have shut down my blog long, long ago without it.
As far as TypeKey goes, it wouldn’t bother me. I got an account when I recently upgraded MT. It might lessen the number of folks leaving comments but it will only weed out the uninitiated. I’m guessing you won’t even notice.
By the way, you can on turn both TypeKey and good old Name, Email, etc. comment registration at the same time. That’s how I’m set up at the moment. You can even set controls about what is moderated (e.g. anything that is posted by a non-TypeKey member). The level of control is pretty wonderful but it is even better if you can run MT-Blacklist. The new version of Blacklist is even better this time around.

I found that renaming mt-comments.cgi (details here helped quite a bit. If someone is specifically targeting your blog, they’ll just change along with it. But ‘bots that just cruise the net looking for instances of mt-comments.cgi will be defeated.
