AFK 10/21

First off, I’m appalled that it’s the 21st of October already. That thing they say about time moving faster as you get older is hellaciously true. This is very bad news when you have a book deadline.

Second off, I’m going to be AFK, at least as regards the Whatever, through Monday. Places to go, things to do, other writing to catch up on. Also, the prediction earlier this week that I would be taking a Whatever hiatus in November is looking more and more like a go. Like, a 75% chance of hiatus. Plan your reading substitutes now.

That’s all I got. Please, consider this an invitation to make this an open thread, to talk amongst yourselves. See you on Monday.

  1. Actually, this is John’s cat, Ghlaghghee. Please don’t tell him I am capable of literacy and typing.

  2. AKF is a secret geek term that is the equivalent of letting an answering machine screen your calls.

If you don’t want to talk, you’re AFK.

If you do, you just “forget” your AFK and respond. ;-)

Not always, but that it is sometimes how it works. I do suspect that John is merely AFW – Away from Whatever, because I think his book writing skills would be impaired were he AFK.

  3. I had always hoped that time slowed down when you were writing a book–much in the same way that it slows down while you read it. (Or am I the only person that tends to extrapolate read-time into real-time?)

I figured if this were the case, I could make my life seem a lot longer by writing, but alas, you’re bursting this bubble.

  4. It was 90 here in Houston again today. I find it very difficult to believe it’s the almost November.

Cardinals vs. Red Sox in the World Series. This could be the best series in a long time.

  5. Ghlaghghee,

While you’re at the keyboard, would you care to comment on this “PBBSA, CSCS” issue that’s been
    dogging (heh) Mr. Scalzi?

  6. Woo hoo! Go Cardinals! (says the St. Louis native) I’m really looking forward to the series. I lived in Boston for a year, so if the Cards don’t win I will at least be pleased for the Sox. =)

  7. I know John (or, how do we know? Maybe the cat made the original post) said this is an open topic, but I have a response for our host (and/or his cat).

Time speeds up. We’re all screwed.

Actually, I did read a theory once about this, and the theory does have a name, but I don’t feel like hunting for it. If you’re interested, go to Google and start digging.

Anyhow, the theory, nutshelled, says that time is all about proportion and the longer we live, the shorter the proportions are. Example: If you’re five, your birthday takes FOREVER to arrive because, well, a year is a full 20 percent of your life (and seemingly more because you don’t remember the first couple years). If you’re 80, a full year is only 1.25 percent of your life. Meaning, it seems you have a birthday every other friggin day.

The theory is more complicated than that, obviously. In sum, if it seems as though time speeds up when you’re older, you’re not imagining things (according to the theory).

Not sure how any of it applies to cats, though.

  8. I like to read the intelligent ramblings of others, but in short format [something to do while at work, when I need a quick 2-5 minute break]. I think I’ve just gotten lazy these past few years, and haven’t been able to find anything that piques my SAS. If Mr. Scalzi isn’t updating, the computer geeks over at /. are having a slow day, and I’ve already read the news a few times that day, I find myself stuck with nothing to do in the short five minute windows I can find to browse.

  9. ah that young vote. so I suppose if someopne named
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch or Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu runs for office they are sure to get those votes…

    :)
