Another Appearance

My pal Joe Rybicki sent this picture from Stacy’s Bookstore in San Francisco, from his phone cam, no less (it’s like living in the future!), and the note that this was the last copy in the store. Since Stacy’s had three copies on hand as of 12/13, according to its site, this is good news, although of course I certainly hope someone at Stacy’s had the good sense to reorder after two copies went out the door.

So that’s two sightings of the book in California, and I know at least a few other people in the Golden State have picked up copies. Needless to say Amazon still has it listed as unavailable, because apparently in a past life I dumped a load in Jeff Bezos’ shoes and he’s yet to forgive me for it. I checked my local bookstore and it’s not available here yet (although they do have a whole stack of Book of the Dumb 2, so I can’t complain). So: If you’re in California, you seem to be in luck — if not, not yet. Naturally, I’ll let y’all know when I see in on my own local bookshelves, at which point I’ll stop yakking about its availability. God knows, if it’s at my local bookstore, it’s going to be everywhere else in the world.

  1. John,

I checked with Books-A-Million here in Richmond and was told they wouldn’t receive the book until the 22nd. I haven’t been by Barnes & Noble, yet.

    Patrick

  2. I’ll be visiting Powell’s here in Portland Oregon for the express purpose of discovering if I can obtain a copy of OMW, or at least to bother an employee to see if they just haven’t displayed them yet.

    Stay tuned.
…Because Portland is SUCH a hub of SF. Why, if you can’t impress the discerning Ursula Le Guin fans here, you might as well give up being a novelist now. Such is their power of harbingering.

Just ignore the thriving 8-track market here. It’s purely anomalous.

  3. I’m apparently the *second* person to ask about it at the B Dalton’s location in Springfield, Ohio— not in stock, but they’re ordering it for me.

  4. I haven’t actually seen the book in any of my usual Salt Lake City book-haunts, but a friend of mine gave me a photograph of the cover last night and told me he’d ordered me one as a Christmas present…

  5. On a related note, my order for the “Terrain Twister” was cancelled by Sears, and it is sold out everywhere, but of all things I found the last one at our local WalMart a few nights ago.

  6. That’s a very innovative way to say: “Sorry the gift’s not here yet,” and I congratulate your friend.

  7. “God knows, if it’s at my local bookstore, it’s going to be everywhere else in the world.”

Well, no, because I can’t believe you haven’t, like, gone to that very bookstore and mentioned the book once or a dozen times…they’d have to stock it to get you outta there!

  9. My local bookstore is in Minnesota, so it has popped up there. Don’t know if it’s in the chain bookstores out here yet, though (and it might not be–the place I got mine at is a Sci-Fi/Fantasy specialty bookstore, so they might have been more keen than the chain stores to acquire it early).

  10. Hey John, just picked up the book at a Barnes and Noble in the upper west side of Manhattan. It was the last copy too! :)

And no, I’m not sad that you lost my name as a beta tester in the acknowledgements. Just much congratulations on the book! Here’s to many more.

  11. Thanks, Michael. To tell you the truth, I’m super-embarrassed at losing some of the beta-tester names. So I’m glad to hear you won’t hold it against me.

  12. You’re welcome.

Saaaay… Call me crazy, but it looks like the photo of you on the dust jacket was taken by you holding the camera. Or, is that your “stylish” pose?

  13. No, it’s me doing the “hold the camera” thing. They needed a picture, like , *quick.*
