Your Wednesday Open Thread

Another snow day; Athena has a dental appointment; I have some errands to tend to; All play and no work makes the mortgage foreclose. So — here, have an open thread and talk amongst yourselves.

As a conversation starter: Orange — better as a fruit or a color?

Feel free to ignore that if you prefer.

See you tomorrow.

  1. Definitely a fruit. I actually painted a still life of an orange a couple of weeks ago as an oil painting exercise. Oddly enough, there was too much yellow in the orange.

  2. Snow day? Today?

Of course, I’m about 60, 70 miles to the south, so yesterday’s snow was merely depressing, not life threatening.

  3. Yeah, Jim. I don’t get it either. It’s totally a nice day around here. The boiler must be out at the school or something.

  5. “1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings. Peach, for example, is a fruit, not a color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have no idea what mauve is.”

Excerpted from an email of “Guys’ Rules”, which is also lots of places on the net according to Google.

  6. And ‘puce’. Don’t forget ‘puce’. I almost hurled when I discovered that women considered it a colour.

  8. I would have to say it’s much better as a fruit than a color. Of course it’s much better as a county when the temp in Chicago is 10. (A bit of SoCal envy right about now…)

  9. Definitely a fruit, although after hearing “The Power of Orange Knickers” off Tori Amos’s new album, I may think again.

Eh, I just said “album.” Guess the demographic group, kids!

  11. John, didn’t you have a similar comment thread like this a year or two back? And someone pointed out that in non-standard varieties like Appalachian English, quite a few things rhymed with “Orange”…

As for orange — originally a fruit, later a color. Two things for the price of one. Why have to make a choice?

  12. Knock Knock
    Who’s There?
    Banana
    Banana Who?

    Orange
    Orange Who?
Orange you glad I didn’t say banana?

(Sorry, first thing I thought of when I saw the topic up for discussion. Can you tell how old the kids are at my house?)
