Visions of Mad Doctors

athenatonsils.jpg

One of Athena’s friends is having her tonsils taken out this evening; Athena asked what tonsils were and, having had them explained, was suddenly filled with anxiety that she would have to undergo the same procedure, and quickly sublimated it into the artistic process. The resulting picture, however, is not her going under the knife of the rather maniacal Muppety-looking doctor (note the scalpel), but her friend. We assured Athena that she was not required to get her tonsils out unless they became horribly inflamed, and assured her that both of us still had our tonsils in, with nary a problem, and yet we were in decrepit old age. This seemed to relieve her somewhat.

I’m just digging on the doctor in the picture. Man, that’s one creepy physician.

  1. There must be some industry demanding the tonsils of young people.

I took my son to the doctor two days ago. The Doctor felt my sons tonsils and asked if he snored. When we said that yes, infact he did snore occaisionally, he told us that they needed to be removed along with his ‘adenoids’. The doc mumbled something off about needing to correct the problem or it could ‘disfigure’ his face. My son is four. I am not putting him under gas because his tonsils are swollen.

Later that day and twice since then (not counting your daughters friend) I have heard about little kids getting their tonsils removed. It’s that damned stem-cell research I bet(j/k)!

  2. I was always bummed that I never got to have my tonsils out. There was a Very Special Care Bears episode about it, and ever since that day, I wanted to get mine removed. I knew you got to eat jello and pudding and milkshakes for weeks and weeks afterwards, so I was all for the idea.

Is that doctor holding a chainsaw?

  3. It looks like a rather large scalpel in his left hand, and a flower in his right hand. Aw, how sweet.

I’m more concerned about his googly-eyes.

It’s a financial concern, healthcare and insurance outfits advise doctors to recommend the procedure as they feel it’s cheaper to pay up for an early tonselectomy than the accumulated expenses in antibiotics and treatement that’ll come up due to various infections over the upcoming years.

  6. probably not the time to have a family screening of “Marathon Man,” either…

(I know, Sir Laurence played a dentist, but still)…

  7. I’m pretty sure I told the story of my son’s monstrous adenoids. Snoring in little kids can indicate sleep apnea, and who needs that?

But I’m wondering why the Doc has her mouth wide open when it’s the kid that will lose the tissue?

Maybe the Doc is saying “Say Ah.”

And is that a sound balloon from the kid? What’s the kid saying?

  8. The doc:
    — like Patch Adams, is wearing a pair of fried eggs over his eyes to add levity to the situation.
    — has spectacles, not googly eyes (or fried eggs).
    — is wearing a mask, as docs do to protect the guilty.
    — is a southpaw and as such is not to be trusted.
    — has four digits on his right hand (easy with the knife there, doc!) and his left hand has been COMPLETELY REPLACED by the scalpel.
    — has a very, very long neck.
