Class Act

One more reason to be glad Tor is one of my publishers, via this online obit of Andre Norton:

Her last complete novel, “Three Hands of Scorpio,” is set to be released in April. Norton’s publisher, Tor Books, rushed to have one copy printed so that the author, who had been sick for almost a year, could see it.

“She was able to hold it on Friday,” Jewell said. “She took it and said, ‘What a pretty cobalt blue for the cover.’ “

The obit says the she asked to be cremated with the first and last books she wrote; she’ll be able to have that wish fulfilled.

Good on ya, Tor.

  1. That’s pretty cool….I knew Tor was good peoples.

I want to be that old when I go, and that active in my writing and art. I think about how Will Eisner was working on his art right up until the day he died.

  2. Particular thanks to our editorial assistants, including but not limited to Natasha Panza and Liz Gorinsky, for making this happen.

In this business, everybody’s only as good as their assistants. They’re the ones who know the current voodoo necessary to make checks appear and warehouses emit books. Without them we’d be halt and lame. Okay, we are anyway, but worse.

BTW, as I emailed SFWA, the correct title of Andre Norton’s last solo novel is Three Hands For Scorpio.

  3. I do believe that Andre Norton was the first fantasy author I read, way back when I was, oh, probably 10 or so. It was a Witch World book, although I can’t remember the title any more.

Yes, even before I’d read LOTR.

  4. Andre Norton? “She”?

How clueless am I, episode LXVII (numbering restarts each Tuesday).

  6. Don’t feel bad, Alkali. She chose a male name early on in her career because she felt it would help her sell better to boys.

  7. Damn. Just when you think publishers are soul-sucking, money-grubbing parasites, they pull something like this.

    (kidding! I’m kidding!)

  8. Nooo, Andre Norton passed away???? Say it ain’t so!!!! A friend of mine once told me that not only was she female (a fact that my SF/fantasy geek crowd knew back when I was in HS in the 1970s), but she was African-American AND a librarian who had worked in the Cleveland, OH, public library system. This fact was significant to me because she probably my aunt, who also was a Cleveland public librarian. I got the idea that Ms. Norton was a youngster when I was a teenager, so she must have lived a long, full life.
