Open Thread, 6/9/05

I’ll be scarce around here until probably Monday, on account that I’m off to Vegas to hitch up a couple of friends. Sometimes being an ordained minister is fun, fun, fun. So here’s an open thread for you folks to play in until I get back. And to get the ball rolling, a zen-like question:

What’s the sound of three hands clapping?

I await your thoughts.

  1. I’m gonna go with:

    CLAP-CLAP-“Ow!”-CLAP-CLAP-“Ow!”-CLAP-CLAP-“Ow!”-CLAP-CLAP-“Ow!”-CLAP-CLAP-“Ow!”

Assuming the third hand is attached to an arm coming out of the center of ones chest that is…

  2. Three hands clapping is the perfect metaphor for going to Vegas–wedding capital of the world, with more marriage officiants than you can shake a casino chip at–so you personally can marry your friends. Nice.

  3. “This seems as good a time as any to point out the SF author stencils–”

Yes! They are cool and everyone should go see them.

  4. Aw man. I love stencils! I am soon to be donning a Scalzishirt.

As for the sound of three hands clapping… I’m sure it’s a Zen koan that Zaphod has pondered many a night after drinking one too many Pan Galactic Gargleblasters. ;)

  5. Regan —

I’d love to see a photo of the shirt if you do actually make it. I haven’t gotten a chance to try making one myself, but I plan on it.

  6. “This seems as good a time as any to point out the SF author stencils…”

If you’re at all interested, I made vector art versions of the stencils Ryan made. They’re the same images, but with crisper lines. Feel free to take them, whether you give credit to me or not. (All the real work was Ryan’s anyway.)

They can be found at: Ryan Freebern’s Stencils Redone

  7. Wait, AND you’re a minister?

What’s next? Pilot’s license? PhD? Boat Captain?

  8. I can’t believe nobody has yet said something like on the one hand, on the other hand, and on the gripping hand….

  9. I’ll go with “splortchity-splortch splortchity-splortch” on grounds that any mutant abomination or alien with 3 hands would also be extremely slimy and oozy.

  10. Steve Reich – Clapping Music – performed by three 1-handed performers hitting their thighs. Obviously!

  11. Out of curiosity, do you think the fact that I’m in Vegas has anything to do with the fact I just deleted 600 poker comment spams?

  12. Hey, I just returned from Vegas. Perhaps, you could find some of the money I left there. They assured me that they would give it a good home, but…

Have a blast and if you get a chance, having dinner at the Stratosphere is an experience I highly recommend.

  13. hi man,
thats weird. i mean not the 3hands clapping, i mean that yer writing style tends to look witty at the 1st sight and however moderately, but indeed entertaining it is, but then alas whatsoever its rather just a bunch of second-hand wit and humour. so all in all theres a hint of shallowness in it.
Hey man, could you improve? I bet you can! Pls try it, then i might turn out a faithful reader, but else…
Yea, course im kinda trying to offend you, but thats just for yer improvement. and for justful emberrassment over the plagization of good old antony burghess’ ‘one hand clapping’.

    whatsoever best luck.
    kovácske.

by the way im just now planning a trip to vegas, so it was really useful to read yer remarks on it. gonna try the double hamburger and hope, its really as good as ya say:)
    adios.

hey, one more thing, actually the most important issue for me, can you please answer and tell something about the url or irc or icq, cause i ve just never tried, have no idea how to get it downloaded, and i would really like to go for it. specially, cause im away from home for couple of months and i badly need to chat with my girlfriend, who stays home, so pls help, thanx!

  14. Kovácske,

Ummm…”antony [sic] burghess [sic]”? I’ve got the strangest feeling that he might have heard the phrase “one hand clapping” somewhere before….

    Heh, kids today….

John, on the bright side, Kovácske does seem to believe that you’d make an excellent tech support worker, so that’s kind of sweet.
