And Now The Bad News

I’m at crunch time for The Last Colony, which means that from tomorrow until the end of July I’m going to spend almost all of my waking life writing, buffing and polishing that book in anticipation of shipping it off to its editor. My blathering here is very like to wrench down to a minimum. I know I’ve said that before, but by God, this time I mean it. This means entries are likely to get very short, and the likelihood of me spending a whole lot of time in the comment threads is fairly small (depending on who you are, you may find this a good thing).
I was in a similar crunch last July and brought in guest bloggers for what I thought was a very interesting (and highly successful) month. I don’t think I’ll repeat this trick this year but I may entertain the notion of bringing in a couple of other folks to post when the mood strikes them. I’ll decide that this week. No, this isn’t an open call; I’ll contact the folks I’m interested in if I go that way.
Once The Last Colony is done, I’m sure I’ll be back to my hypergraphic ways around here. But I hope you’ll indulge me over the five weeks if the Whatever is not filled with the same mass o’ text you’re used to. I promise, I’m still writing, just somewhere else where you can’t see it. Yet.
Update: 10pm: Also, I’ve redone the colors around here.
Sounds exciting. Good luck John!
Yes, concentrate. Get this book out.
I can’t wait for your next book! You Da Man!
By all means, get that book WRITTEN! I’m waiting…
“cause I really want to read it!
OOOOOOOHHH!!!
I like the new colours!
Site redesign enacted in the five minutes between my computer crashing and my computer being rebooted.
COINCIDENCE?????
Probably.
Go, go, write like the wind, giving all of us more goodly goodness to read thereby. We salute you.
Hey, Whatever is all fuzzy now. Hopefully it’s not supposed to represent a certain person’s mental state.
*spit take*
There’s no way that last remark wasn’t totally self-referenial irony. No frakking way.
I actually think that’s a land-spped record for minimal time lapse between Scalzi posting a “too busy working to even breathe, let alone blog” warning and then engaging in public displays of rampant cat vacuuming. Good god, man. You couldn’t even wait until the next post?
(Eagerly awaiting the inevitable Flickr stream of photoshop madness…)
Good news. I’m really looking forward to The Last Colony. I hope it answers some of the questions raised in The Ghost Brigades.

“I actually think that’s a land-spped record for minimal time lapse between Scalzi posting a “too busy working to even breathe, let alone blog” warning and then engaging in public displays of rampant cat vacuuming.”
You’ll notice I said “from tomorrow” in the post, thus giving me time to pop in this new design without irony. Indeed, that’s one of the reasons I wrote “from tomorrow.”
“From tomorrow”? Hah. I’m with Soni. I love seeing a post like this show up. If historic trends continue, we’ll see lots of fun new posts and pictures over the next few days.
See? I’m helping! In order to prove us wrong, you’ll have to work on the book instead of cat vacuuming. (Or at least take up a different form of cat vacuuming, one that isn’t readily aparent from our blog-based vantage point.)
The brand new Look is more sci-fi and less homey. The old Whatever page style would look good at BTW.
Huh. Nice. I liek the family photos, though I’m gaga for a good nebula shot any day.
At first I saw now change, but then a quick refresh and Safari showed me the light.
That’s weird – I had to refresh as well for Firefox to show the new layout…
Much prefer the old background
Oooo! Ahhhh! Tres spacey, mon ami. I love purple, but I do miss that Scalzi personal touch. I love your photography as much as I enjoy your writing.
I like the new design. Quite VanGogh-esque.
I was going to compliment your skill in making the colors continuous and then I saw it was just a book matched.
Still, a good effort for someone who has no time.
Onward and upward with the latest book! I finally bought the first two from Amazon. (I’m a little shopping-shy there, as I tend to overspend.) I’m looking forward to reading them!
Ditto on the refresh to view with Firefox thing. Didn’t see it last night (assumed I was just being dense or tired and wasn’t picking up on something), then came back today after full computer shut-down and boot up, and only realized when reading the comments about the purple colors and spacy stuff that I was really missing something. Did a shift+refresh and bingo. Firefox has one hell of a sticky cache, I guess.
Spiffy look, btw.
Good luck. Just remember us from time to time.
(and I like the new look)
