Checking In, 11/18/06

Hello. I’ve been running about like an idiot today at Philcon and generally having a good time, and I’m about to go out and about and have dinner and whatnot. But I want you all to know that I talked about you today and about how one of the interesting things about the Whatever is how it pretty much has gotten to the point where it hums along nicely without me, thanks to the community here and its penchant for posting and keeping the comment threads active. I mean, I like to think you guys want me around, you know, just for kicks and giggles. But I do like that there are folks here who keep it interesting even when I’m busy doing other things.

For those of you sending along e-mail on this particular subject: Yes, I know there’s an Entertainment Weekly review of The Android’s Dream; no, I haven’t seen it yet, but yes, I know it’s a good review (for those of you who don’t know, EW gave the book an “A-“). I’ll try to track down the magazine and see what it has to say.

So, hey, how is your weekend so far?

Update, 9:06pm: Found a copy of EW in the hotel gift shop. Here’s an excerpt:

Scalzi’s hilarious political thriller, filled with war heroes, hackers, religious cults, and AI, is so absurd that it becomes believable. His best book yet.

That works for me.

  1. Congrats on the A- review in EW. That’s pretty impressive considering that they very rarely review Science Fiction.

  2. Picked up Charles Stross’s Accelerando and started reading it this weekend. It’s my first exposure to his work and I’m thoroughly enjoying it so far.

I came by him by way of your blog.

Going to Austin’s Fonda San Miguel restaurant with my wife and all four children for Sunday brunch tommorrow to celebrate my birthday.Assuming daughter number two gets in from Colorado tonight(she’s driving). Fonda San Miguel Sunday Brunch may possibly be the very finest meal to be had anywhere. Jmho but Eddie knows food.

  3. Let me also congratulate you on the EW review although I haven’t read it. I have read TAD and personally recommend it although OMW is still my favorite.

  4. Considering that I live in Philly, and I didn’t get to PhilCon to say hi, I’m kinda bummed, but other than that, not too bad. =)

  6. Weekend started with a late day at work on Friday. Today was catch up. Rewired some of the Halloween decorations that went belly-up with all the rain (had to splice wires for some of it). Put everything away since it had finally dried in the garage. Swept leaves off the roof (yes, off the roof). Getting ready for Xmas and the writers group I belong to is having a meeting tomorrow.

Hope Philly is still going great.

  8. From EW (apologies for spoilers): Ridiculously, a diplomat’s fart ignites an interplanetary incident. Now Earth’s fate hinges on who’s first to deliver a genetically modified strain of sheep DNA to the leader of the alien Nidu. For Fans of – Philip K. Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, which inspired the title. Last Word – Scalzi’s hilarious political thriller, filled with war heroes, hackers, religious cults, and AI, is so absurd that it becomes believable. His best book yet.

I agree with that last part. Congrats!

  9. I have YAC (Yet Another Cold) and am feeling slightly cranky as a result. On the other hand, did some quality writin’ this morning, and saw ‘Flushed Away’ at a cheap matinee, so it’s been a good weekend so far.

  10. TAD sighting at Schuler’s Books in Grand Rapids MI today — several face out copies on the “top pimp shelf” of the hard cover SF/F shelving. So many SF/F covers feature dark forboding scenes that the sky blue TAD is practically shocking.

    Dr. Phil

  12. Good for you on EW. Don’t think for a minute you could leave this blog in our hands. I would move everything around until I looked good in profile. Tough work at best.

  14. I looked in E.W. on -line & didn’t find the review for Androids Dream.I did find a review for OMW though. Bummed though that I didn’t find what I was looking for.CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

  15. Hmmm… weekend. It was busy at work, and I wrote 4k words for Nanowrimo. Also there was an awesome Battlestar Galactica episode on Friday. And I was seriously annoyed that Dr. Who ended on a cliffhanger. :(

  16. Cat-herder? We don’t need no steenkin’ cat-herder!

(Hey! Is that bacon over there? Mrrrow!)
