John Scalzi’s Culinary Discovery of the Day

It’s not rocket science: Three scoops vanilla ice cream, a handful of Rice Krispies and a spiral of Dulce de Leche dessert topping. In a word: Yum.
I was gonna take a picture, but then I ate it. Sorry.
This wasn’t one of those “You got Rice Krispies in my vanilla ice cream just as I accidentally dropped the Dulce de Leche topping into the bowl” sort of discoveries? Because I hate those kind.

Also good, if you are an eggnog fan: Haagen Dazs eggnog ice cream (seasonal flavour) and Belgian butter wafer cookies. (They are like buttery sweet ice cream cones rolled out flat. You can dip them in the Haagen Dazs like chips in dip.)

Don’t know if I’m allowed to go off topic here, but I just finished “Amagansett” by Mark Mills. Nifty murder mystery set on eastern Long Island in 1947. Excellent read!
Rice Krispies? That makes it a marginally defensible breakfast!
Thank you, Mr. Scalzi. My mornings just got a little brighter.

I wonder if you could make Dulce de Leche from nog….
That’s it! I’m sending you the delectable item I’ve been meaning to send you for weeks but have been too lazy to sennd. Prepare to be sugarfixed!
So, have you tried fish sandwich with cole slaw on the sandwich (instead of a side)? Or my favorite comfort food, peanut butter, mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato?

Okay, I hope you don’t mind, John, but I’m just going to steal that line and save it for a proper occasion. Or for an improper occasion, maybe.
What you need were caramelized Rice Crispies. Not ordinary rice crispies.
Well, but with the dulce de leche, that’s overkill.
There’s no such thing as too much caramel.
Unless you’re not man enough.

A drop of Drambuie goes well with vanilla ice cream, too.
A slight variation. I had completely forgotten about this, but as a kid, one of my favourite desserts was:
vanilla ice cream, handful of corn flakes and then pour golden syrup over the top.
Thanks for jogging my memory – I’ll be sure to try it out again soon!
