Spammity Spam Spam

I’m getting hit with a massive amount of comment spam today, much of which is getting through my filters, and I’m fiddling to make it go away. A side effect of this may be that I accidentally delete an occasional legitimate comment. If this happens to you, don’t take it personally, please, just go ahead and repost. Thanks.
Speaking of spam…well, not really, but this is as good a place as any to post this.
The night before last I had a dream about you and your wife. You two were serving wonderful pastries that I can’t remember the name of now, but I remember thinking in the dream that I had heard of these things before but I’d never eaten them. The blueberry ones were my favorites. Delicious. It seemed like you had a very nice house and that you were both quite friendly.
And, man, could you cook.
Does this mean I’m spending too much time reading The Whatever? That I’m jealous of your baking skills? That I need to bake a schadenfreude pie for myself?
Mmmmm. Pie…
Interesting. And creepy! And alas, in the real world I am not that fabulous a cook. I just have a few good tricks. One other hand, if someone would be content with minestrone and pie for dinner, I’m their man.

Alas, I think the comment spammers were out in force today, as I was hammered with a couple hundred, all of which made it past the filters. It’s more than a little aggravating to go through and delete that many. And frankly, I’m not sure what to do about it; none of it had any links in the actual comment field itself, which is how I usually block this crap.
What do you usually do to block this sort of thing?

Something tells me this won’t get through again. Just thought I’d try again. Heh.
I am so not ever seeing the TAD sequel. :(

So, wait. Are we all invited over for soup and desert?
MMMMM, SOUP!!!111!!!
Hey Mr Scalzi – my boyfriend and I were watching the news yesterday, and they reported on the possibility of flowing water on Mars. He didn’t know how seriously to take all this, what the scale of the pictures was, etc. My first reaction was ‘ooh, the people I read on the internet are going to be so happy about this!’, and I said to my boyfriend that I was going to check what Mr Scalzi’s take on the news was, since he’s the space news guy for me. So, do you have any thoughts/assessments on the water on mars question?
Sah-weet! I’ll have a frosty mug of Mars to wash down my Scalizified minestrone and schadenfreude pie.
On the other hand, I’m currently not all that thirsty, so I don’t know if I really care about water on Mars.

Yeah, there is Spam everywhere these days, great heaping globs of it.
Ah, SPAM. Makes “mystery meat” sound good. Something that’s almost, but not entirely unlike ham has to have something going for it.
As for the “recently flowing water” on Mars, that’s just the most likely explanation for the discolorations. Although it does give more evidence for the possibility of underground aquifers on Mars (which would be a neat thing).

See if you can get a copy of YAASP (Yet Another Anti-Spam Plugin) for your blog. I use it (my blog runs on Nucleus CMS) and it blocked a couple of hundred spam comments today. Whatever it didn’t take care of (which is maybe only one or two) got taken care of by captcha. (most of my comments usually come from my Livejournal. I rarely attract real responses at my poor, lil blog).
I would imagine that someone with as popular a blog as yours would definitely want antispam measures that work (Blacklist is seriously wanting these days). Try YAASP if you can. I think you’ll like it.
If it wasn’t for spam in my email, I would never have learned that I apparently have over $300 million in conflict diamonds, and thanks to a really sweet lady in Africa, I should be expecting my money any day now.
Once it shows up, the first order of business will be to build a Little Debbie factory somewhere on the Scalzi Compound. It’s just my way of showing thanks, man.
