Having an Amazon Dork Moment

Here’s why: At this very moment I have three books with an Amazon ranking under (or over, I guess, depending on how you want to look at these things) the 1,000 mark, each in a different format: The Last Colony at #297 in hardcover, The Ghost Brigades at #258 in mass market paperback, and Old Man’s War at #908 in trade paperback. I’ll throw in the usual caveats about Amazon rankings being notoriously slippery, because they rank sales relative to other books on Amazon, not by hard sales numbers, and so on and so forth; still, that’s kind of neat. It’s nice to see the series, as a series, getting traction.

  1. Congrats. When the TGB paperback is released, rest assured I’ll help it climb to a high Amazon ranking.

  3. Congrats. Always nice to see my favorite authors start getting success. It means I can look forward to more books by them :)

  4. Just bought Ghost Brigades from Amazon. How pleased I was to see they sent me a first edition hardback, instead of the trade paper I assumed I was getting. A terrific read, though I realize I’m way behind the curve on this list.

  5. Same thing happened to me last week – ordered GB and figured I’d be getting the TBP, but I got hardback. Started it last night, fell asleep around 0400, so it is holding my attention just like OMW.

  6. Damn. You’re beating me by about 100 places.

Now I’ve got to fight the urge to go onto amazon and buy a dozen copies just to get above you….

    Must… resist….

  7. Heh. I’m sure we’ll criss-cross a number of times, Pat.

Incidentally, if you go here, you’ll see your book and mine hanging out together.

  8. Well, to be clear, if you order TGB from Amazon’s TGB hardcover page, that;s what you’ll get; if you order from the TGB mass-market paperback page, that’s what you’ll get, too. There is no trade paperback edition of TGB, so if you get one of those, please do let me know, because then you have a pirated version.

  9. Wow, that means my trade paperback version of TGB must be really valuable!

Seriously, John, I hope to see you at the Poisoned Pen tonight (might not get there though). I finished TLC last night. Loved it. It even left the whole OMW universe in a better place. The sign of a really good author is being able to improve the whole universe and make GOOOGAADs of money in the process.

  10. I just received my copy of “The Last Colony” from Amazon yesterday. I had also ordered a copy of “The Sagan Diary” but they just sent me an e-mail saying it is no longer available.

  11. Congratulations. (Great book BTW.)

Hate to burst your bubble, though — it’s still not likely to be as popular as Bacon Cat :-)

(Thinking outside the box is a good thing, but I don’t think you and the box were sharing the same planet when you taped bacon to your cat! :-)

  12. I’m a bit late to the party, but are there plans for a trade paperback edition of Ghost Brigades? I just bought the trade paper of OMW (although I’m behind on my reading so I haven’t gotten a chance to crack it yet) and since that’s actually my preferred format for books, I’d love to be able to get TGB as a trade paper, as well.
