Out on Tour Through May 10

From April 23rd through May 10, 2007, I’m out on a book tour, supporting my latest novel The Last Colony. Here are the tour locations, dates and times.
I will be blogging here during the tour. During the tour entries here may be both shorter and more sporadic than usual, because, you know, I’m going to a different city every day. The most recent entries for the Whatever will be posted directly below this one, which will stay at the top of site until May 10. I will be blogging about the book tour itself daily on the Ficlets Blog, but if you have questions comments about the tour, you can leave them in the comment thread for this entry.
I hope you’ll come see me on tour!
Ouchie. A sans-serif font on the Whatever. Like peanut butter with my putanesca. Yech!
Hush. I wanted to separate it out from the normal entries.
Don’t forget your computer.
Forget the computer. Do you have your towel?

Yeah but Arial?! Butt ugly!! Try Verdana next time. ;-)

Saturday night was way cool even if I did break. See you in Seattle.

just finished ” the last colony” , it rocked!
i already can’t wait for the next book you write.
i only have ” the androids dream ” left to read , so you know, hurry up and write something.
I’ll be there! I like the Arial font myself. :-)
Hey, John,
Hope to see you here in San Diego. BTW, after you finish your book tour you might want to mark your calendar and schedule a culinary tour in Northern Illinois in late May. They are expecting cicadas to emerge which happens once every 13 or 17 years. It must be an eerie experience to have millions of edible buzzing creatures flying around you.
Any chance we could get you down to Texas for one of these? It’s only a hop, skip, and a jump from Ohio. :-p
Dude, you are going to Google? Cool!
Right, I understand. You wanted it to stand apart from this post.

The italicized font, you know, I wanted that comment to stand out.
(Yeah, I’m a bass turd. It’s Monday)
Safe travels — see you in Columbus.

Outstanding! You’ll be just a hop, skip and a stagger from my house on May 4th. Finally, I’ll be able to get my copy of TAD all nice and Scalzified. I’m so excited, I may even shave my face for the occasion.
I’ll see you when you get here…
In view of John’s request that we shill for his tour by dragging along everyone we can find to pack the event I will be rolling through downtown Seattle on the way to the Ave picking up rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shit-kickers and Methodists.
Unless they move the event there were only about 30 seats the last time I was there – come early.
John,
As Alan said, we’d love to see you in Austin. And hey, Book People is the top rated independent book store in the country…
John, any chance you’ll be coming back around Philly-way again?

Got a question about you Cincinnati appearance. Tor Website sez:

May 31st is a Thursday. Is you appearance actually on Thursday or on Monday, May 28th?
Not too critical for me, as I will see you in any case at the Heinlein Centennial in July.
Hugh
Just checked JoBeths’ website, and they’ve got it down as Thursday the 31st, not Monday.
Lee,
Cicadias :: shudder::
I was in Lawrenceville IL in the 70s during one of those manifestations. I was young, naive and thought we were being overrun with mutant bugs. One landed at my feet near my son and I kinda freaked. It gave the neighbors a chuckle.
There were millions and millions of them.
All in my yard.
Coming after me.
EWWWW….
Yo Scott!
What Chang said. (Only with pants on)

John, don’t you wish C-span’s booknotes did fiction and in particular, science fiction? maybe we could get up an email campaign??
See you at UCLA John!
Omaha Lisa,
I mentioned the cicadas only to pique John’s and other reader’s curiosity. I try to experience things that are not in your regular “normal” life like having been to almost all the tallest skyscrapers in the world, riding the fastest trains, etc. I do not seek out extreme sports but going to events such as solar eclipses and volcanic eruptions gives me a perspective that is kind of out-of-this-world. It will change your view of things especially watching the “aurora borealis” or northern lights is like seeing another planet. I’m sure being in the midst of a cicada bloom will give someone the same sensation of encountering an alien invasion.
When I was at Clarion in 2004 and the cicadas were buzzing, I wrote what was intended as a humorous piece about a city dealing with the 17 year cycle of giant cicadas — automobile/truck sized ones. I thought it terribly clever. The story crashed and burned in the group. (grin)
Still, the image of homeowners using ground penetrating radar to map where the bugs are in their lawn, in case they were too close to the foundation or under the driveway, still sticks with me.
When I was in high school in North Carolina, we had a particular strong cicada bloom — what is really freaky is finding the empty husks of the insects still gripping tight to the tree bark when they molt, with these two clear bubbles for the eyes, like the gunners’ blisters on the sides of WW II bombers…
Definitely alien invasions — when we moved to West Michigan I’d never been inundated by June bugs before… and in May yet! They tend to run into things, so it looks and feels like you are being attack by swarms of nasty insects. The local kids just stomp on them.
Guess they showed dem bugs who’s on top of the food chain.
Dr. Phil
Dr. Phil, yeah Michigan June Bugs. Ugh! I once got hit by one in the throat while tooling down a MI farm road on my motorcycle. It was like getting hit with a baseball. I thought I was going to suffocate as my throat swelled, I spent an hour sitting on the side of the road gasping for breath. You bet I stomp on every june bug I see when I visit my folks in MI (hey, the bugs declared war on me! It’s their own dammed fault!)
Wow! Are you going to be busy! I’m excited for you though and hope the turn out for each signing is fantastic and financially beneficial to you.
Loved Last Colony, by the way. My glowing review will go up on for the May issue of the Estella’s Revenge magazine next week. In addition to feeling very fulfilled by the closing chapter of the trilogy, I really enjoyed your acknowledgements at the end. Very touching, very cool.
Dr Phil & bugs:
In our tent in RVN we had an invasion by a male rhinoceros beetle (they can get 4-6″ in length). One of my tentmates was a helo pilot with many many combat missions. He saw this beetle and began to shriek like a little girl and grabbed the nearest weapon – a wood saw – and began to run around the tent bashing and screaming and swearing while everyone else lay on the ground and laughed until they hurt.
It was a BIG bug, though.

With no stop closer to Boston than DC? Sheesh. Are you at least planning to make it to Readercon again?

Got The Last Colony yesterday from Amazon.
Finished it yesterday. Great job, as usual.
This now brings my collection of first editions of yours to a perilously high number: Old Man’s War, Ghost Brigades, Last Colony, Android’s Dream, Sagan Diary, and the special signed versions of Agent to the Stars and the other short thingy in the Old Man’s War universe.
I want these to be a point of pride someday, like my dad’s huge collection of Heinlein first editions. Don’t fuck up.

We don’t know yet. Last day for the ballots to come in is the 28th.
Anonymous:
Indeed, not fucking up is the goal.
Christopher Davis:
No Readercon this year, I have the Heinlein Centennial to go to.

The SFWA site stated in February that:
The ballots must be returned by April 28 to be counted. The results will be formally announced at the Nebula Award Weekend. [May 11th – 13th]
So nobody knows yet.

I saw John reading tonight at Borderlands Books in San Francisco, people. He bugs his eyes! He waves his hands and raises his voice! (He’s a pretty good writer, too!) It’s fun and amazing!
Go see him if he’s passing through your neck of the woods. It’s worth the four-drink minimum.

In case you haven’t seen this already George Bush got funky.
The best part of the video is watching Laura’s reaction.

Gah! Why can’t you come to Texas? Please come to Texas.
Oh well. Enjoy the Centennial, and I guess those of us in Massachusetts will have to live without you until next Boskone or whenever.

John – Come to Atlanta also. The Last Colony rocks!
Just found this earlier this morning. Thought it might be of interest, especially to those who might not be able to get to see him in person, because he isn’t coming to certain states…. like New Jersey… *cough*cough*
You’re going to Jo-Beth in Cincy and not Lexington. Hate that. I’d drive up, but I’m flying out the next morning at 6am to go to Book Expo. Is Tor bringing to NY for that? I got to talk to David Hartwell last month, and he’s very high on your stuff. I have to say I’ve enjoyed them greatly–finished The Last Colony a couple of days ago.

Hi, Mack. No, I won’t be at BEA this year. Maybe next year, though.

John!
WoW – figured I’d jump on your blog because I bought Old Mans War Saturday night. I’m sitting here bleary eyed at work because I’m on Ghost Brigade now.
What a ride. Haven’t read a book like that in a while and I really enjoyed it!
Thanks man!

Wish I could make it to this coming Wednesday at the Beaverton Oregon Powell’s Books.
(And I think the layout there is bizarre.)
I’d send books to be blessed with ink but I think it’s kind of rude to do that and not even be there.
Steve H:
Don’t be silly. Have someone bring your books.
I really liked the interview you wrote for the Tor/Forge Books newsletter featuring Sameer Desai via bottom of a well.
I haven’t read your books before but now I think I should pick up a copy just to see what a “twit” Sameer Desai really plays out to be.
Well, you know. He’s not actually in the book, because I disliked him so much. But I’m glad you liked the newsletter!
Portland Report
Just got home from seeing John and his entourage. No interpretive dance. Jay Lake appeared with the Campbell Tiara, and John modeled with lots of photos flashing. He signed my book, but I’ve been told I’m not to stay up all night reading TLC – nor read it first thing in the morning because Tomorrow Will Be A Busy Day. Wah. But a good time was had by all.
John,
Your itinerary reminds me of an episode of “Monk” where his dad was sent on a wild goose chase to erase evidence of a crime. Anyway, the upside to this is that you will probably log more frequent flyer miles than you would have if it was organized differently.

Question: I haven’t seen an answer to this (forgive the noobness if I missed it): how long is your show? I’m planning to be at Detroit-Novi.

I usually read for a half hour, answer questions for up to a half hour and then sign until everyone’s got signatures. But it depends on the venue.

Less than 24 hours until you are at Uncle Hugo’s in Minneapolis! Yippeee!

Stay tuned for week three!
John, how can you come as close as Richmond and *not* come on over to Charlottesville? Inconceivable!
