What? Another Snow Day?

Around these here parts, February is also known as “the month what the youngin’s don’t get edumacated because it’s all snowified.” Which is to say there hasn’t been a week this month where at least one day has been canceled due to snow — sometimes when there was hardly any snow at all. At least today there is an appreciable amount of the stuff; so naturally, today is the day I had to drive somewhere — namely to the vet, to drop off Zeus, so he could drop off a couple of testicles. His testicles, to be clear, unless he’s sneakily managed to add a decoy pair he got somewhere. In which case, I really don’t want to think about it, and I trust the vet will not be dissuaded. She’s seen a lot of cat testicles in her time.
How’s it with you?
It’s -35 windchill, -12 actual temp. But the sun is shining and if I ignore the snow and just look at the sky through my office window, I can pretend it’s spring.
-11F/ -29F with wind chill. Gotta love MN.
School is NOT closed–it needs to be about -40 windchill to close for cold.
We need some of your snow.
We live here in Vandalia, OH and my son is having a snow day as well. It’s a pretty snowfall, I’m watching it fall as I’m playing on my laptop.
Will you get to see the eclipse of the moon tonight? We should have a good view from MN, and the arctic blast will keep the sky clear.
18F here in DE. No snow to be seen. I yearn for your snow.
Here in Arizona, we keep our snow in the mountains….cause it belongs there !!!!!
We sometimes drive up there to frolic in it but feel no need to live with it in close proximity.
Just got my dog fixed. This is my first male dog. Poor little guy just doesn’t know what to do. He’ll stand up, realize it hurts and sit right back down. But his little doggy brain keeps prodding him to do stuff, so a few seconds later he tries again. Mostly were keeping him in his crate just to keep him from hurting himself.
I was in Quebec City a little over a week ago, where they had (by the time we left) 330 cm of snow this year. That translates to about 11 feet. A few more centimeters here and there didn’t stop anything: kids bundled up and went to school.
Here in Connecticut, a half inch falls and they start canceling things left and right. Meh.
Saffron the Rhodesian Ridgeback has been having some sort of seizure this morning–difficulty walking, eyes twitching like she’s had a couple of pots of coffee or a couple of tabs of speed, vomiting.
I have a vet appt. at 10:40, Eastern. I could take her to the emergency vet, but I’d need to take out a second mortgage to pay for it (those places are dang expensive).
The fun never stops, does it? My father is declining due to Parkinson’s, my father-in-law just found he has cancer and now this.
Well, at least the new “Culture” novel was in the stores yesterday.
30F / Feels like 38F in Maryland…. brrr!!!
/ducks
Here in central Texas, it was overcast and about 60 degrees when I walked my son to school and the dogs to defecate. I put on a T-shirt instead of my work shirt, to keep my work shirt from getting sweaty. Pretty soon, it’ll be just dang hot when I do this morning routine.
Working, and it’s the last day of school (college, of course) before “spring” “break”, during which I point out that employed adults don’t always get to go somewhere warm for “spring” break, and that both of my instructors have assigned HUGE projects to do during our “break”.
But at least I don’t actually have to go to -class- next week.
Weather is actually fairly decent. Dusting of snow this morning but nothing worth writing home about.
I believe my day will be better than Zeus’.
It’s 40F this morning in South Central Alaska, just as it’s been for the last week. It rained yesterday, all day. Much of the snow has melted off, just wet ice remains, slick as greased goose shit.
The Iditarod starts in two weeks – we’re going to be needing some serious snow before then. Also cold; the dogs overheat in anything above about -10F.
It’s been a weird winter.
Jim Wright: Hey, I used to live in Alaska … graduated from UAA :) Sounds like you’re having one of those rare relatively snowless winters.
I remember going to Whitter and Valdez one year (before they finished the tunnel, so you had to use the train), and they literally had 20ft of snow. Whole houses were buried, unseen except for a path or tunnel going up to the door (or window, occasionally).
Well, I don’t know about the weather hereabouts, but for some reason I found a pile of fake cat testicles hidden in my barn.
ooh, I hate you! that snow looks delicious; me I spent all day in weather that has me feeling like a toasted tomato. or peanut, in fact, since I’m a little dehydrated as well.
It’s 72 degrees where I am and not a flurry in sight. Or cat balls. My five mutant poms and I are cleaning out the fridge. I sniff meat, throw it over my shoulder; they smell meat, chomp-tear-fight-over-it. Perfect.
I woke up and wanted to go to work rather than sleep.
Something must be wrong with me.
Seattle is nice and snowless. And for the last few days, rainless, which is just weird.
For the cat who doesn’t have it all — neuticles! A small “natural” pair will run you $229 (not including “installation”).
http://www.neuticles.com/
We discovered neuticles when searching for an implant for my husband, a testicular cancer survivor. Neuticles was the first search result. We found info on the human version at http://www.acor.org/TCRC/implants.html In the end, he decided to be the “one ball wonder” (his words, not mine).
At least the snow days make sense…Dayton schools used up all their “snowdays” this August because it was too hot and no air conditioning in the schools…(and now we see what is wrong with year round schools…)
Our male cats, having had their “surgery” two years ago, are watching the snow plows, hoping the plows will crash into a parked car…
I was just trying to figure out if the Gulf is warm enough for kayak fishing yet or not. Enjoy your snow, I don’t miss it.
Better get ready for more, the GISS recorded the largest annual temperature drop ever.

And the solar guys still can’t find any sunspots. I hope to God we’re not looking at a Maunder minimum.
So you’re “editing” Zeus for editing you in the previous entry?
“Let’s see what we can trim here?”
I hope to God we’re not looking at a Maunder minimum.
Out of curiousity, why? Maybe I’m being naive, but it strikes me that a 100 year solar-induced drop of 3-5 degrees is exactly what the planet needs, right about now. Gives us time to figure out technological fixes CO2 issues without having to also spend time and effort building seawalls around Bangladesh.
What is this “snow” of which you speak? It looks cold. I don’t think I want any of that. You can have it.
60 degrees with drizzles. Suposed to be like this all week. We have seasons in San Diego, they are subtle is all.
Neuticles? Hah! Some people will buy anything. I am with Ambers husband. As long as it works life is good and if it doesn’t work what’s the point of making it look like it works?
Wow … not every day that someone asks after the well-being of my testicles.
Mr. Scalzi, I am happy to report that my manly jewels are intact and happy to serve the greater good of the gene pool.
Regards,
R

Hey, good, thanks for asking! No snow yet. We also get a fair amount here in Maine. But none this week. In fact, it;s been warm enough that the landlady has been in the basement a couple times this week vacuuming out water. Approximately 1,000 from it.
Digital thermometer cheerfully reported this morning’s temp as -0.4degF. Clear skies today, brilliant sunshine on the icy, slippery roads of West Michigan. Managed to avoid any of the big pileups on the freeways. Yesterday was white-out day and I declared my own snow day. Good thing, too. At 1:10pm I realized the furnace wasn’t working. Much cheaper to get a daytime service call that 7pm at night. (grin)
Dr. Phil
It’s 28 here in PA. No snow on the ground or in the air, though local forecasters have been attempting to scare everyone with a predicition of “plowable” snow on Friday. Rescheduled Saturday’s vet visit for our dog (just in case our road isn’t plowed by then); he tested positive for Lyme disease 6 months ago, received a 30-day course of antibiotics, and now needs to be retested.
The weather here in Fairbanks is about the same as Jim’s in Wasilla. The sun is shining, Rick Kleffel’s Agony Column is playing on the iPod, and life is pretty ok.
Currently in the SF Bay Area we are in between storms. Current temp is 54 F. Hoping it stays clear long enough for eclipse viewing.
63 and rainy in San Diego. Definitely not so bad temperature-wise, but Southern Californians and rain don’t mix.
Luckily, I’m from Seattle so I’m enjoying it.
How’s it with you?
My testicles are in tact thank you very much!
And snow is not a problem here, but we eagerly await the forecast of this year’s hurricane season. And by forecast I mean a complete and total guess most likely involving a monkey and a dartboard.
Yesterday, on morning radio, the newsreader underwent a vasectomy while reading the 8AM news.
I no longer listen to that station, as, even though I don’t possess such a set myself, I was squicked. Please do not telecast or broadcast such things , whether performed on pets, or lower lifeforms such as radio newsreaders.
That is all.
Hello to Jim Wright and Tania. Now I’m curious about how many Alaskans hang out here.
Our nephew from the lower 48 is staying with us this school year, and I couldn’t figure out why he would head for the local news channel some mornings when he’s usually the stereotypical oblivious teen. Then he explained he was checking if it was a snow day. Cue evil laughter (Alaskan kids don’t get snow days).
I don’t think I remember ever having a snow day… Well, except when my parents had to dig the front door out, but I don’t think I was in school yet at that point. I live in Winnipeg, MB though, so perhaps we’re a special breed of stubborn?
Fisher @ 37 – There are more of us here than you think… Jim and I usually surface. Jeri is an ex-pat living in Washington state, but occasionally she comes back for work.
Snow days! Hah! Your poor nephew, he’s learning the hard way.
Pretty snow picture. Any chance of you posting a link to a larger-size copy so I can use it as my desktop wallpaper ? :)
OMG! that is fricken hilarious your awesome! today was a snow day here(random)
