Scheduled Downtime

As a head’s up for folks: Early Wednesday morning (Eastern time) my host provider is going to be doing upgrades to its servers, including the one Scalzi.com is on, so it’s possible Whatever will be inaccessible for at least some part of that time. So if you can’t reach the site during that time, don’t panic. It’ll be back up soon. I’m letting you know early to give you time to incorporate this event into your world view. You’re welcome.
Oh noes! Teh Internets going away!
Well… I suppose I could do work or something.
Well… I suppose I could do work or something.
Now, that’s just crazy talk.
Scalzi drove me to it, Hugh. The man gets in your head. He makes you do crazy things.
As a professional Systems Admin, let me point and laugh now. It doesn’t matter how loudly, or how many times, you announce imminent down time, some one is going to bitch, moan, whine, and complain about “ZOMGWTFBBQ!? how could you do this I have $IMPORTANT_THING due in an HOUR!!!” At which point I usually put the Complete Asshole hat and point out that we’ve sent out email twice a day every day for the last two weeks and it’s not my fucking problem. At least you won’t have to hear about that, but someone, somewhere, will send you email letting you know that Whatever isn’t available, and hey, maybe you should look into that…
Actually, Jaime, I have never had a problem with telling a user “Did you read the notices that were sent out?”
“Oh, I never read those damn things. Too much time.”
“Well, then, I’d say you have a problem I can’t solve for you.”
*Whew*, panic induced by the lack of Whatever can be severe. (“OH my gosh! What happened to Scalzi? Did he get slashdotted? Farked? What horrible hit could have taken the Whatever out of commission? Did he wake up this morning and think “It’s Just Words!”? Did he come unpinned?)
Thanks for the heads-up.
