Duck, Duck… Winner!

After much delay, I’m happy to announce the winners of the duck contest are An Eric, for his always-timely recasting of Animal Farm, and Alex Jay Berman, for an answer that is (you should excuse the pun) a little blue.

Both these gentlemen will be receiving an ARC of Subterranean Press’ upcoming The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox, an omnibus of the three delightful Master Li novels by Barry Hughart. You may recall that we folks here at Whatever were in some way responsible for this new edition of these works, so I’m delighted to be able to send off a couple of these ARCs as prizes.

So An Eric and Alex Jay Berman, e-mail me your addresses, and I’ll get these in the mail. Congratulations, and thanks everyone for playing. It was ducklicious.

  1. *Gasp!* I was starting to think this moment would never come!

    Congratulations to the winners! ^_^

  2. Are you now ready to start accepting donations to your rubber duckie collection? If every regular Whatever reader sends one, you will soon have the largest collection in Ohio.

  3. John–

I’m terribly sorry for doing this via comments section, so feel free to delete this after you’ve read it, but I’ve chucked a few emails your way to verify something for a podcast, and hadn’t heard back from you yet. Maybe my email got accidentally blacklisted, or gmail is eating your replies (if so, please send it one more time; i’ve whitelisted every email address I have for you tonight). Thanks.

  4. Is that Master Li? Looks like a little blue bath duck to me.

Or maybe that is the Number 10 Ox. Still looks like a little blue bath duck to me. Or maybe it is the representation of the Number 10 Ox. Mr John had better be careful that the little blu bath duck does not become the simulacrum of the Number 10 Ox. Or maybe the duck is a third level simulation of the number 10 ox, which is a second level simulacrum of Master Li.

Whatever – none of this is real.

  5. But will An Eric be unpublished at some appropriate time in the future?

Maybe because of some crime so foul that we won’t speak of it, while repeatedly mentioning how foul it is?

Or is dismvwllng adequate punishment for being against the people?

  6. Thank you, John. I’ve sent you an e-mail with my address.

I’d like to dedicate my win to Professor Martin back at App State, who taught me a good bit of Chinese history, and who had a wonderful obsession with ducks.

  7. Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to all of the entries that made me laugh, gasp, groan, or shiver.

  8. Congrats to the new ARC owners, and kudos to Subterranean for printing the editions.

  9. A standing ovation to Subterranean for that omnibus. I have been recommending this series for years and this makes it far easier. The third book was not quite up to the standard set by the first two but that was a very, very high bar Hughart set for himself. Now if only a publisher would convince him to return to the saga and give us the remaining four he promised.

The duck is obviously a reincarnation of Number Ten Ox. If it were Master Li the damn thing would be as black as night.

  10. Congratulations, guys! Well deserved wins, I must say.
I loved AJB’s and Eric’s was brilliantly executed (well, not yet).

  11. Congrats to the winners.
Cute duckie banner on top there! Sure wish I could download it for my duck race duckie at the house…

  12. Psuedo-related, but has the hatemail contest been decided? I check the site daily, on account of the usually amusing posts by our host of hosts here, but I haven’t seen anything. Did I miss it, or is it still unwon? I want to see the vitriol!

    Also: Duckake? Ha!
