ArmadilloCon Schedule

Just a reminder to folks that in two days, you’ll be able to see me at ArmadilloCon in Austin, where I am Guest of Honor, along with the fine people that you see listed in the picture above. If you are anywhere near Austin, or, heck, indeed, Texas (because it’s such a small state, you see), I do hope you’ll come by. We’re going to have a great time.
For those of you who are coming, here’s my schedule of panels/appearances:
Opening Ceremony
Fri 7:00 PM-8:00 PM Phoenix North
Anderson, Crider*, G. Haldeman, J. Haldeman, Persons, Scalzi, S. Williams
This kicks the convention into full swing.
New Space Opera
Fri 10:00 PM-11:00 PM Phoenix North
Duggins, Fletcher, Mills, N. J. Moore, Picacio*, Reasoner, Scalzi
The subgenre established by Doc Smith, Edmond Hamilton, and Jack Williamson has persisted and evolved to a new tradition upheld by Iain M. Banks, Lois McMaster Bujold, Elizabeth Moon, John Scalzi, and others. Our panelists will discuss this evolution, where they think Space Opera is now, and where it’s going.
In the Beginning
Sat 11:00 AM-Noon deWitt
Latner*, Scalzi, W. Spector, M. Wells
Our panelists look at worldbuilding for writers, artists, and game designers.
Guest of Honor Q&A
Sat 1:00 PM-2:00 PM Phoenix North
Scalzi
Fannish Feud
Sat 4:00 PM-5:00 PM Phoenix North
Anderson, Babcock, Bobo, Crider*, Docherty, Gelb, G. Haldeman, M. Hall, Persons, Picacio, Scalzi, S. Williams
Join the fun at our game of trivia pitting fans vs. pros.
Forever Wars
Sat 5:00 PM-6:00 PM Phoenix North
Duggins, J. Haldeman, Person, Rosen*, Scalzi, Swann
Our panelists discuss military sf inspired inspired by or written in response to Robert A. Heinlein’s classic Starship Troopers. They’ll compare and contrast portrayals of war from WWII through today.
Movies
Sun Noon-1:00 PM deWitt
Hale, Klaw, Leicht, Miles, Scalzi, Person, M. Williams*
This has been a booming year for science fiction, comic book, and fantasy movies. Our panelists tell us which ones you should have seen, and which you can safely avoid. Of course, they’ll probably talk about movies of the past as well.
Autographing
Sun 1:00 PM-2:00 PM Dealers’ Room
Kenner, Rountree, Sarath, Scalzi, Wedel
Guest of Honor Reading
Sun 3:00 PM-4:00 PM deWitt
Scalzi
For those of you wondering what the reading will be, I suspect that I will be reading from the first chapter of The High Castle, since it’s fun and since it’s pretty likely that, as this will be my first time in Texas save airport transfers, few of the folks at the reading will have heard it yet. It’ll be worth staying late on Sunday to hear, I promise.
Also, I have it on good authority that, yes, there will be at least a few copies of Zoe’s Tale available for purchase at the convention. Which means that unless the book arrives here at home today, some of you will get your copies of the finished version of the book before I will. The irony! It burns!
When I’m not at my panels and other appearances, I’ll likely be just hanging about with my surprisingly large contingent of Texas-based friends (Chris Roberson and I are scheduled to have a rumble — watch for it!) and generally trying to be available, as behooves me as Guest of Honor. Do feel free to say hello if you see me.
So: Who will be at ArmadilloCon?
I’ll be there, this time just to hang out. Please drop in on the FenCon party. We’d love to say ‘hi!’
Wish I could. Got fambly down there, too.
Have some BBQ for me …
(Hint: Salt Lick … ’nuff said).
I’ll be there for a day, probably Saturday. We can swap Wil Wheaton stories. :-)
(And if you want a ride to the Salt Lick, mi Saturn es su Saturn.)
Comment drift starts NOW!
WAAAAAAA!!!
I was supposed to attend!! Then my wife had to go and get a job!!!! For money!
:-(
Oh, and I vouch for the Fencon folks. Quality people, them. ConDFW folks too. So, you have a stranger’s completely UNSOLICITED opinion and impartial recommendation.
Oh, and iffn’ you’re interested in starting a fight (Geek fight, lots of head shaking). . . just ask the Austinites where the best BBQ is. Hilarity ensues.
True story, they used to have a “Where to eat” panel. Turned out, in the room, the only non-Austinites (Austonians? Austies?) were me and another fellow. Everything was fine and dandy ’till they got to BBQ: “Oh, no, you’re wrong, the sauce X is much better, though I admit their hot links are great.”
TP, Stuck in Dallas . . . with books he was gonna get signed by the Scalzi . . .
I’ll likely be making the short drive from DFW. I might even bring my father, a recent convert to Scalzi SciFi for an impromptu book signing (if you’re game).
Pete: Oddly, the 3 hour drive from DFW to Austin is short . . . for Texas . . . and only gets you to the middle . . .
I’ll be there with my husband. We’re going to the con to celebrate our wedding anniversary. How geeky is that?
Look for a brunette with butt length hair and a blond with mid-back length hair.
I will be there — at the very least, to stop by and introduce myself before we get to spend a bunch of time together on Martha’s Vineyard in September :-)
If you need any advice about cool stuff to do in and around Austin, let me know.

I’ll be there. And we are taking you to County Line on Sunday for BBQ. :)
See!!! County Line, Salt Lick . . . might as well just say “well, isn’t real barbecue pork . . . not beef?”
TP, instigating pointless feuds since now . . .
I’ll be there! Short girl, dark hair, pigtails.
For what it’s worth I like County Line. Although I’ve only been to Salt Lick once and that was years ago so I might have forgotten what they taste like.
I hope to run into some fellow Whateverites (Whateverareans?) there! :)
I’ll be there. I met you VERY briefly at Worldcon (Mary Robinette Kowal intro’d us in the Hyatt bar right after the Hugos). I’ll be in the Dealer Room most of the con, at the Talebones/Fairwood table. Congrats to you, btw, on your Hugo!
My wife and I will be there (from San Antonio). I’m planning on putting a “BACON” sticker on my con badge. Just in case you’ve forgotten what life’s really all about.
Dave
I will be there, and hope I can get there early enough on Friday to obtain a copy of Zoe’s Tale.
John, do not believe these County Line heathens.
I’ll be there – but OF COURSE your Q&A session is scheduled for IMMEDIATELY before my government final starts at two o’clock. At least that’s the only interference for me. Oh, er, I’m pretty short, dark blonde hair, probably in a ponytail. I will try to get a Bacon sticker from Whataburger. (BTW, forget BBQ. Have Whataburger. Especially their Breakfast on a Bun. They have bacon! Though I prefer the sausage.)
Hmm, I just realized I’ll have like no time to study in the next two days. Oops.
I can’t go, but the reason I can’t go is that I bartend at an awesome coffee bar/real bar on Fourth Street! If you have a spare minute and find yourself downtown, you shall have a celebratory Hugo drink on me!
County Line? Seriously? What the heck is wrong with you people?
No one should be exposed to County Line prior to having Rudy’s!
TK
<a href=”http://rudys.com/”Rudy’s.
Mmmm. Never before has someone mixed the gas station aesthetic with bbq so well. It has a feel not unlike a Cracker Barrel, with the exception that the food at Rudy’s is awesome.
Apparently, I am an HTML n00b and I forgot to close my damned tags. John, can you help a brother out? Sorry!
Mmm, Rudy’s is definate yum.
The absolute best in wax paper dining.
mmm . . . Rudy’s . . . where getting EXTRA fat is a menu option . . . a POPULAR menu option . . . it’s good too . . . (Oh, don’t look at me like that . . . once a year won’t kill ya . . . just keep it to a minimum . . .)
My brother actually had Rudy’s cater his wedding…. Good stuff!
I live just north of Austin and am going to pop down for a little tomorrow night. And Saturday. Oh, hell, let’s just make it a weekend out of it; I’ll be there Sunday as well!
Actually, my wife is giving me a weekend at the con for a birthday present. I heart my wife! Gonna be my first sci-fi convention as well! {insert happy geek dance here}
