10. @wygit: I out-dweeb you: the obit didn’t mention his role as Col. Vautrain in “TNOT Lord of Limbo” on the original Wild Wild West, either. (Not an insignificant episode, I might add: ask any W3 slash aficionado…)

13. As long as we’re throwing out genre references, he also played a minor role in two of the Planet of the Apes films as well as a starring role in the last two Spy Kids movies. I’m not sure I even want to comment on the fact that his last recorded acting role was for Family Guy but then not all actors can end their careers on a high note.

16. In the obit they ran on CBS (I work at an affil) they did the “he was best known for…” and had a clip from Fantasy Island. I then said I only knew him as KHAAAAAAN. Which they never mentioned.

17. Not to mention, Patrick McGoohan (Prisoner, Secret Agent Man) also passed away today. Man, sad to open up google news today, I’ll tell ya :(

    Damn…incredibly intelligent actors and fine human beings to boot. They will be sorely missed.

19. Wrath is my absolutely favorite ST movie, because of Khan. Too many movies (and books even) play their villains stupid. It was so refreshing to have a brilliant villain and Montalban was perfect for the role. Just perfect.

20. Will miss both, but probably Montalban’s Khan the most.

    And NBC mentioned BOTH Fantasy Island and Star Trek in the obit they did on the nightly news this evening. Which I thought was nice.

22. I think that if I was him, I’d have had an arrangement with Shatner to walk up to the casket, scream “KHAAAAAAAAAAAN!”, and walk out. Preferably in the uniform from the movie.

23. AP also failed to mention Star Trek in their piece, at least as published on NPR.org. OTOH, I’ve seen lots of Khaaaaan! jokes today, and one other reference to the Corinthian leather. So lots of people clearly know what the Associated Press is too unhip to mention.

    Also recently deceased: John Scott Martin. I’ll grant you he’s not as well known as Montalban and McGoohan, but he was the man inside many of the Daleks in the original 1963-1989 series of Doctor Who. He also played other monsters and the occasional doomed human.

24. Christian @21 — Yes, a very memorable line written by Jack Sowards. I was talking to his nephew Brian the other day, who let me in on the inspiration for that chilling scene.

    For my money, the only great Star Trek film, especially when Khan accuses Kirk of knowingly planting the Space Seed on a planet of an unstable sun which later Kirk confirms when he cuts off Chekov with a terse, “I know what he blames me for.”

    Kirk always knew, that “preserve the Federation at any cost” SOB.

    I’ll never forget as a five-year-old imitating McGoohan’s Dr. Christopher Syn as the Scarecrow or at nine admiring his brainy morality as John Drake while Johnny Rivers sang in my head or at twelve his scream on the beach as the Prisoner.

25. They also didn’t mention that he is the voice of the infamous “Senior Senior, Sr.” on Kim Possible. I have kids who are addicted to the show and he is their all-time favorite cartoon baddie. He will be sorely missed!!

26. And even after all these years, I’m faintly intimidated by Montalban’s man-boobs and how even a genetically superior genius couldn’t buy a shirt to contain their magnificence.

    And I always preferred the fine over the rich or soft variations. His enunciation was just so…him.

31. I found it surprisingly fitting that Senor Montalban chose yesterday to shuffle off this mortal coil, for it was the 8th anniversary of my Mom’s passing. And she had a HUGE crush on him! Hope they’re sipping tropical drinks and dancing up a storm on the “Fantasy Island” in the sky… ;-)

32. I re-watched Wrath of Khan on only the 2nd of the month. *sighs* I’ve spent the day trying to think of something better to say than “Bollocks”, but really that kinda sums it up for me.

    Bollocks. That’s a damn shame.

33. No one seems to be mentioning his appearance in the Spy Kids series of films. Just bringing this up in case any younger members of your family ask who the heck was Ricardo Montalban.

    His Wikipedia biography has several interesting tidbits that didn’t make it into the obits, including many of his credits in Mexican cinema and Hollywood westerns. Wikipedia insists that “rich” Corinthian Leather is a misquote, though I suppose Chrysler and its ad agencies would be the only true authoritative sources for that information.
