Where I’m At

The view from my chair:

You can tell it’s a swanky hotel because the plants aren’t plastic (yes, I just checked). I’ve actually stayed here before, although the last time was back in the early 90s, for a Disney movie press junket. That was the junket where I got to see the sets for The Nightmare Before Christmas and saw Danny Elfman sing “Jack’s Lament” live while a rough cut of the scene from the movie unspooled behind him. Danny Elfman’s not here this time, drat the luck. I’ll have to find something else to do with my time, I suppose.

Anyway, I’m waiting for my room to be available. This is what I get for taking a morning flight. What are you up to?

I enjoy pie.

I love San Francisco. There’s just something about cities that are surrounded by water on three sides. I’d move there in a second if it wasn’t for those naughty fault lines (and the fact that real estate is just about as insanely expensive as in NYC.)

Lucky dog. Bark at one of the sea lions off the Wharf for me if you get a chance to go out there.

What’s the difference between a seal and a sea lion?

About 400MeV. (Geddit? Sea Lion? Seal Ion? Geddit?)

I love grand hotel foyers. They smack of biplanes and high adventure and dotted lines going across vellum maps to rousing brass music.

Anyway, I’m trying to relax in the name of getting an early night – gotta pack and get ready for my own bit of aviation on Saturday, and the butterflies in my tum appear to be trying to make little caterpillars to call their own.

I’ll trade you, John. I was out in -2 weather, taking the tire off my daughter’s car so it could be fixed. It was a victim of Chicago’s potholes. Now I think I’ll have some hot chocolate.

Oh, come on you guys, classic TRAINS, not planes!!

Elegant bar cars, sleepers, private cars, porters to wait on your every need…

And I’m getting ready to freeze my arse off as I head home here in a bit. Atlanta, you say, humph. It was warmer in Alaska by about a dozen degrees today, we’re hitting 12F or lower tonight and tomorrow night we head for single digit range!

Sorry, I’m from Buffalo, if it’s going to be this damn cold there better be SNOW to play in along with it!

Like everyone else who is NOT you, I’m also freezing my ass off in OH. Unfortunately, my house is so old–and uninsulated–that it’s a balmy 63 degrees in here today. And the sickest thing? I’m so used to it that it doesn’t feel *that* cold. Oh, and I baked two tiny chocolate cakes. Take THAT Mr. FancyHotel with room service.

If it’s the Palace, be sure to leave some of the non-dairy creamer that comes with your room’s coffee machine in a bowl outside the door.

Otherwise Warren Harding’s ghost may let the other ghosts steal your oil reserves.

When you posted this, I was at a software developer conference called CodeFreeze (which is a common term) in MN, where we’re on the final laps of a long cold snap.
