Amelia Beamer, Sex and Zombies, Serialized Fiction

By day, my pal Amelia Beamer is a writer and editor for Locus magazine, the magazine of record for the science fiction publishing industry. By night, she writes fiction! Note that these time divisions are arbitrary; for all I know she could write fiction during the day and spend her evenings editing. Or maybe a little of both. I don’t stalk her, you know. I don’t have a moment-to-moment rundown on her time. Nevertheless, she does both.

Amelia’s first novel is about sex and zombies and is called The Loving Dead and will be out in July from Night Shade Books. But in the run up to the print publication, Amelia is also serializing the novel on her Web site. Here are the first few chapters; more are on their way, and I expect will be posted here as they go live (Note: the excerpt linked to above is not the sort of thing you’d be reading out loud in a church or a kindergarten class, unless your church or kindergarten were very strange, and I think this is an accurate enough description to allow you to assess clicking through without spoiling the action therein).

If you enjoy what you read, go back for future installments, but also consider buying the book itself, because, hey, buying books from authors is a subtle yet telling way to let them know you enjoy their work. I’m just saying.

  1. I don’t stalk her, you know. I don’t have a moment-to-moment rundown on her time.

You say that, but we all crave her braiiiiinnns. Admit it. You do too. Mmmm. Braiiiins.

  2. Based on my one, entirely-too-brief meeting with her, Amelia is a lovely and brilliant lady, almost to the point of being intimidating. Okay, not almost. Especially now she’s gone and got herself published!

I’m really stoked for her, actually. And a tiny bit jealous. But mostly stoked. Can’t wait to buy her book, simply on the basis that I met her one time. Ha ha!

  3. John, has anyone actually attempted to quantify the value of a Whatever / Big Idea mention? Solely because of a positive mention on Whatever or because a Big Idea piece resonated with me, I have made several book purchases. Today, I clicked through to Amelia’s serialized work, read it over lunch and am now subscribed to that feed.

  4. I work with Amelia, and I’ve never caught her writing about zombies on the clock, but it’s possible she’s very stealthy…

She’s awesome, and her novel is awesome, and I’m glad more and more people are going to find out how awesome she is.

  5. And I thought zombies were in no danger of suffering the fate of the vampire—crushed under rampaging hordes of romance novel fans…..

  6. Actually, I wasn’t being serious. There’s room for all types of stories. The fact that some people like to read romance novels about vampires doesn’t keep me from enjoying David Wellington’s monstrous vampires. Nor Peter Watts’ science fiction vampires (an extinct subspecies of sociopathic cannibalistic humans reborn).

  7. Bring on the girl cooties!

And I never write about zombies while at work. Like, now, for example. I’m working very hard. At work. Definitely working. Hard. Not thinking about zombies at all.

  8. I wish I had seen this while I still was at work so I could work really hard at not thinking about zombies.

    I feel left behind.

Oh and Girl cooties don’t scare me man… 8D

  9. I too work with Amelia, and while I don’t think she actively writes zombie lit while at work, she does occasionally look up from her computer and moan “braaaiiiiiiins.”

  10. “Bring on the girl cooties!” may be the most quotable line I’ve heard for a while… from an author who’s gonna be quoted a lot this decade.

  11. Pretty, smart, creative women in glasses = très sexy!

::looks a bit gob-smacked and sighs heavily::
