Today’s Ridiculous Fanboy Extravagance

It’s the limited edition (number 864 out of a 1,000) Elfman/Burton music box, featuring CDs of the soundtracks to every Tim Burton film that Danny Elfman has scored (as well as a flash drive with the same, which is that skull-looking disc you see), a hardcover book about their collaboration, a DVD of the two conversing, and other goodies, including a working zoetrope that has printed strips of Burton animations and Danny Elfman doing horrible things to his eyes. It’s ridiculous and awesome, and now it’s mine. Or more accurately, my wife and my daughter’s, since I bought it for them (they’re even bigger Elfman/Burton fans than I am). It was meant to be a Christmas gift, but production delays pushed it into April. Just in time for my wife’s birthday. Well played, gentlemen. Well played, indeed.

If you’re also a completely ridiculous Elfman/Burton fan, I understand there may still be some non-limited versions available. Time to spend all those pennies you’ve been saving!

  1. What’s really cool is that it has updated stuff on each of the CDs. The Nightmare Before Christmas CD, for example, offers extra tracks that weren’t on the original CD.

  2. Congratulations!

Burton had me up until “Mars Attacks”. I would have walked out of the theater except I was so shocked I couldn’t feel my legs.

I don’t think I ever forgave him for that one.

Elfman had me way back in the Oingo Boing days. I don’t think he ever lost me.

  3. Have to admit that I don’t really get this AT ALL. But then again, you’d probably be thoroughly unimpressed by my space patch collection, so it’s all good.

  4. It’s curious. I’m a huge Scalzi fan but detest Tim Burton. Eh, I’ll just let it go.

  5. Tim Burton is the carrot to Danny Elfman’s blue cheese dressing. I envy your new extravagance.

  6. But if they announce that he’s going to be the director of OMW, we’re gonna have problems.

  7. My daughter ordered one for Christmas and our housemate ordered one for herself, so we’ll be a two music-box household! Not sure how long its going to take to get to Au. Their emails propose ‘yesterday’ as the “street date” but we’ll see. I think the ‘make up’ CD arrived about three weeks after John’s…

  8. I covet, but I’m not sure whether Elfman’s work for Burton has ever really surpassed his Beetlejuice score (1988) – although the Oompa-Loompa songs in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were rather good (and used much of the original Dahl verse).

  9. Ok confession time Mr. Scalzi. You either have already or are planning to crank up and sing along with the soundtrack for A Nigtmare Before Christmas the next time you’re alone in the house?

Oh and a Danny Elfman soundtrack for OMW would be great (imagine what he could do with The God Engines though).

  10. So are you and Wil Wheaton going to sing a song or two from that set at a future Con somewhere? Or maybe a w00tstock?

  11. My daughter must not be told of this thing until she has a job to pay for it. Wow!I know where the majority of her future paychecks will go towards.Any chance you could talk Burton/Elfman into giving one away here in some contest? Please? Pretty, pretty, use your contacts in hollywood, Please?

  12. Does the set include the opening theme to the short-lived Family Dog TV series?

  13. It’s probably not going to feel very fuzzy but when I imagine a movie of God Engine I see an Eon Flux looking universe…

  14. Hi!

I also have this box, and am wondering if the music chip in yours is working. I can’t even find out how to work mine!
Do you have tips on where to push/pull/beg/pray?

    And it’s so pretty….
