Personal Updatery, 7/25/11

Updates from the Scalzi Compound.

* For those of you who wondered whether I hit my deadline last Friday: I did not. BUT — as my deadline was Friday afternoon and the editor wasn’t going to do anything with what I sent in until today at the earliest, I finished up on Saturday and as a practical matter it was all the same. If you’re going to blow I deadline, I submit to you that’s the way to do it. The good news is that it’s done.

What is it? Some additional material I’m adding to the next Tor book. It’s not new stuff in the novel, which has been done for some time, but it’s a substantial amount of supplementary material which I think readers will enjoy quite a bit. It’s hard to describe without describing the novel itself, which I’m still not going to do yet. Sorry. I’m not trying to be a dick about it, but some of the fun will be in the reveal.

Since the supplementary material has been finished more or less on time, the book is right on schedule and I believe (don’t hold me to this) it’ll be out in June of next year. So if you were wondering when the next major fiction piece from me was going to be in stores, now you know.

* However, the new Tor book probably won’t be the only new book I’ll have out next year; I’m also likely to have a non-fiction release as well. That one’s still in the mid-to-late formative stages, so no real details yet; I’ll have more when things are little further developed.

* Also, as I noted in my FilmCritic.com column last week, the option for the OMW movie has been picked up again, and there’s currently working the script, so everything on that is going just peachy as well.

* Now that the latest deadline is past, the plan for the immediate future (i.e., the rest of July) is: Shoot zombies. As all right-thinking people should.

  1. The facts do not add up.

The Ukulele madness supposedly started on Friday AFTER your project was done, yet you have now confessed that the project was not completed until Saturday.

Mr. Scalzi, if you do not mind, please step out of the line and join us in this private room where we may ask you a few more questions…

  2. Which is your preferred Zombie-shooting avenue nowadays? Left4Dead2 (Machester United 0)?

  3. Come on,

After last week that comment was screaming to be made.

    But, I’ll stop here.

  4. Unfortunately, I’ve run across quite a few people for whom that is decidedly NOT possible. At least not without an embolism or other messy result, apparently.

  5. Good to hear the new supplementary material for the novel. Having been at your Fuzzy Nation event in Seattle, I’m having fun extrapolating from what I know to imagine what the book and supplemental material will be like. Have you settled on a title? I’m not dumb enough to ask what it is; I imagine there must be byzantine plots involved in revealing it.

  6. Regarding the Zombie thing. I know of a certain “White-Trash Zombie” that might take offense to that position. Might I suggest instead a nice game of “Kill Doctor Lucky.” (If you haven’t you must check it out.)

Regarding deadlines – Our hero Douglas Adams said it best. ” I love deadlines. I especially love the sounds they make as they go whooshing by.”

  7. Ditto on popsiclemud’s comment! And surely your part of Ohio hasn’t escaped this oppressive heat wave that’s down here in Louisville as well. What’s your family’s preferred way to beat the heat? Mine is an air conditioned basement, and midnight sorties to the neighbor’s swimming pool. It’s only awkward if you’re caught.

  8. …my deadline was Friday afternoon and the editor wasn’t going to do anything with what I sent in until today at the earliest…

You’ve discovered the design engineer’s dirty little secret. When we say “it’ll be done by the close of business on Friday,” we know that one second past that is actually Monday morning. We can make Friday last three days if we have to,

  9. “As all right-thinking people should.”

Bah. July is Summer of Arcade month (except in the antipodes, but they have Winter of Arcade which is identical except for a name and colour scheme change)! An action-RPG with its own ever-present narrator! Out of this World’s Eric Chahi’s triumphant return to game design! The long-awaited release of animator Michael Gagné’s pet game project! Some Kinect and soldier-related game no-one cares about!

Also Team Fortress 2 is free-to-play now, so the barrier to entry for both cash and skill has dropped precipitously.

I’m just saying, zombies are nice and all but hasn’t it been done?

  10. You and the wife and kid should try playing Zombie Fluxx. Much less bloody and still much fun. Especially to the slightly warped mind.

  11. Matthew in Austin #1: OGH did not state that his work was done. Note the absence of a preposition after the word “work”:

After I turned my work, of course.

Presumably John turned it the other way on Saturday before completing it. Otherwise all his words written that day would be imaginary – or negative.

  12. If you are planning on shooting Zombies in Left 4 Dead, add me in Steam and we can shoot them together. My Steam Name is “Mondak”

  13. I apologize in advance for this groaner, but John, it was inevitable:

“In Soviet Union, zombies shoot You !”
I will leave you alone now.

  14. I keep reading the subject line of this post and thinking it says “Personal Upholstery”.

    As you were…
