I’m DJing a Dance at Capricon XXXII, or, BWA HA HA HA HA HAH HA

Last year, when I was the Guest of Honor at Capricon XXXI, I made the offhand and not especially serious comment that I would come back the next year and DJ their 80s dance for them. To which Sondra De Jong, the convention chair for Capircon XXXII, said “CHALLENGE ACCEPTED” (more or less, I may be paraphrasing).
And thus, I have indeed been roped in to DJ a 80s-themed dance at Capricon XXXII, which takes place February 9 – 12. And this is what I have to say about that:
ZOMG YOU GUYS IT’S GOING TO BE SO AWESUM.
Seriously.
Also: Cory Doctorow’s the Guest of Honor. So there’s that too.
More details about the dance (like, which actual night of the convention) to come. And yes, I’ll probably be doing other stuff at the convention too. But I’m mostly there for the dance, man.
Yay!! Looking forward to seeing you.
I hope that you will be playing music of the 1880s, it was far more interesting than the music of the 1980s.
Squee!
It’ll be great to see you at Capricon again. And then, you get to grace Chicagoland with your presence yet again at Chicon a few months later. You must love us here.
Will you be wearing a leather jacket and a fake nose piercing? ‘Cause it won’t be authentically 80s if you aren’t.
(Says the girl who wasn’t alive in that decade..)
Have you filled out your programming participant survey yet? http://capricon.org/capricon32/programming/programmingparticipantsurvey/
Yours truly,
The Conchair and Programming Team
Play that funky music, white boy.
Get a mullet wig and mirrored sunglasses to play the role authentic. wang chung.
Awesomesauce!
But…. if the dance doesn’t suck, a rift will open in the time-space continuum and the entire universe will be sucked in and WE’LL ALL DIE. And it’ll be your fault.
Can you live with this?
erp?
I don’t know what else to say…
Sweet. More Depeche Mode, less Madonna, pleez.
Great! Looking forward to seeing you again.
Reggae, ska, new wave, punk, post punk, hard core, goth! I remember hearing all of these in one night at a club in Toronto in the early 80s. Sounds like a blast…

one night in the appropriate venue should make a hard man humble
why dont you go where fashion sits
Will you post the playlist afterwards so the rest of us can bask in the AWESUM? Pleeaaase?
Definitely post photos for those of us who won’t be able to make it! So, are you gonna dress all “Miami Vice” style? Or maybe Star Trek NG, or Battlestar Galactica OS? OR–You could go as the 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th Doctor! Okay, sorry, I’m totally geeking out…like, totally!
Duuuuuuuuudeeeeee! It’s Awesome! Totally Awesome!
I’ll be the guy cosplaying in the red cape and goggles, signing “Cory Doctrow” autographs.
Also: Einstürzende Neubauten! Einstürzende Neubauten!! EINSTÜERZENDE NEUBAUTEN!!!
Woot!
I am officially jealous, having DJ’d a number of 80’s sets in Second Life. Also curious as to what kind of rig you’re going to be using for DJ’ing (call it professional curiosity). Rock rock on!
The BarFleet ship UBS Abandon will be on station and throwing parties at Capricon.
Should you feel the urge for more DJ action, or just want a nice relaxing glass of Andorian Sunspot, we’d be happy to provide.
Come on, Party With Abandon!

What day of the Con and at what time? I will make a dramatic entrance. Hopefully it’s a Saturday night :D
I have heard from a reliable source that the dance is Friday night. I would guess (and this would only be a guess) that it will start around 9:00 PM.
Mr. Scalzi,
I would like to make a few song requests:
1.) Canned Heat – Jamiroquai
2.) Chic – Le Freak (it’s a late 70’s song…but is really good)
3.) The Safety Dance – Men Without Hats
4.) Anything Michael Jackson and James Brown
5.) Comme Un Enfant (Freaks Remix) – Yelle…not an 80’s song, but is really really good…here’s a music video for it: http://youtu.be/B9tNGEt6rmE
