It’s Not the First of May Without Jonathan Coulton

It’s a hallowed tradition here on Whatever to play “First of May” by Jonathan Coulton on the first of May, provided I can remember to do so. I remembered! So crank it up, provided you are not some place where a sprightly song about springtime fornication will in fact get you in trouble. In which case, maybe headphones are appropriate.

  1. So, now I belive I know the ASL sign for “Fuck”. I feel greatly enriched by this knowledge.

  2. Love this song: anyone who can rhyme “big toe” and “in flagrante delicto” is all right in my book. That said, here in London it is eminently not the right weather for what Mr Coulton is suggesting – although early April would have been ideal.

  3. I remembered to play this song first, in my car on the way to work this morning. Cmpletely forgot last year. Not always fully awake at that point.

  4. Probably not wise to perform this action on the first of May in Phoenix – you’re likely to get awkward sunburns. 93 degrees here today.

  5. The “I am Arthur Andersen” shirt is an interesting touch. That must date from, what, 2002?

  6. *Just finished* playing the last track of Best. Concert. Ever. on house stereo, then poured myself a large house blend and Fired up the ‘fox to find this timely reminder…

    <guffaw/>
To flatmate: “It IS a tradition – just ask Mr. Scalzi!”

  7. Just forwarded this to my husband. He thinks it is a fine tradition and believes we should follow the suggestions alluded to in the song. Immediately. Bye!

  8. Don’t have headphones or speakers on this computer… but I know ASL so it works! And I still managed to feel a bit weird watching it at work even though no one around me has a clue what any of those guys are saying.

Also, the ASL version of Re: Your Brains is beyond awesome

  9. That’s it. I am starting a petition to have the Australian calendar re jigged so that I can sing this song in context, in public, without danger of chilblains. Finally, a worthy cause to dedicate my life to!

  10. Northern Europeans started last night. Cum on, CanAmeriBrits, do you want to fall behind the socialists in yet another category!?!

Given the “chorus” signed by the backup singers, it’d be hard to ever forget it!

    @ codersquid

    definitely turn the subtitles on.

    They were somewhat…interpretative, weren’t they?

As far as you know. Whenever interlocutors switch into Spanish like it’s a secret code, I enjoy appearing oblivious.

  11. OMG!!! I thought I was the only one!
I’m annoying the holy hell out of my offspring singing along!
    I’ve also flooded facebook..
I added this blog, to prove it’s not just me
