The View From the Hotel Window, Chicon 7 Edition

Not so bad.

In other news, hi, I am in Chicago and ready for Chicon 7. Where are you?

  1. That won’t be nearly as funny if you edit a preposition into your post, Mr. Scalzi. So please don’t. ; )

  2. At work. Oh, where am I? Selma, TX. (Actually San Antonio, but it’s all the same).

    That’s a dizzying scene.

  3. Sadly, I won’t be attending this year’s worldcon.. I want to, but physics and logistics can be problematic at times. I haven’t figured out how to be in two places at the same time… yet. I’ve got people working on it for me, so stay tuned.

  4. At work, waiting to go home so I can pack for Chicon and then fly out that way tomorrow. Hopefully I’ll get to say “Hi” and see how good your memory is :)

(You recognized me instantly 2 years after VP 13 and surprised the hell out of me.)

  5. I’m in London, England; peering out of my bedroom window there’s City Point in the foreground, and the Gherkin in the background, and from my living room window there’s the (small) lake and the triple towers of the Barbican.

All in all, I’m used to tall buildings…

  6. I am currently in Lisle, Illinois, where I work. Then I’ll be in Geneva, Illinois, where I live. Then I’ll be in Chicago tomorrow for Chicon, staying at the same hotel you’re at now. I’ll see you tomorrow.

  7. I am at Dragon*Con. I will con with you in spirit.

(Note: The preceding is not valid for the first 24 hours after posting.)

  8. On my front porch looking at Bucks Elbow Mountain and enjoying a cold refreshing beverage. If I’d gone to work today, I’d be stuck in bad traffic made worse by a presidential motorcade. I prefer the porch.

  9. Is it just me or does this “View from the hotel” picture have a certain Simcity vibe to it?

  10. I’m in Chicago 11 days ago; I’m quite a bit further east by the time Chicon starts. Would like to be there with you, but this four-dimensional navigation is trickier than I thought.

  11. Also desperately wishing I were there, but at least I got my new tomatoes planted today.

  12. At work in the burbs (Batavia, then home to Elgin) mourning the fact that I could only take Friday off and thus won’t be joining tomorrow’s festivities

  13. Sadly, not there. I’m in Colorado. Just couldn’t make the time and money thing work. :-(

  14. I’ve got almost the same view as you, just looking down the river to the lake. Right now there’s a fire hose of water across the river soaking all the boaters coming in from the lake. :)

  15. BTW, Puddletown, Orygun USA!

One of the few Libertarian/Conservatives out here. It’s like being a civilized man exiled to live with the savage pygmies. Well, intellectual pygmies anyhow…

  16. I’m in Las Vegas, watching and listening to it rain, and getting ready to teach my first real astro class
    of the semester.

  17. That looks like the Sheraton, where I stayed a few years ago for Bouchercon. Wish I remembered more of that con, but that just means I had a good time.

Where I am is Cincinnati, but where I will be is Annapolis this weekend. And because my lovely wife is resourceful, I’ll also be flying there instead of driving eight hours after picking her up from work Friday.

Now, if I could just find a way back to New York or San Francisco…

  18. Today — Durant, OK; Madill, OK; and now finally in my hotel in Mesquite, TX. I’ve driven about 1000 miles around OK and TX last week and this and am looking forward to being home in Washington state on Friday just in time to drive to my parents for Labour Day weekend and then fly out to Naples, FL after that… ;)

  19. Three hours to the west of you with a POS car that wouldn’t make the drive and a lack of 1k in dinero to drop on a WorldCon weekend. (Yes, I could easily spend that at a WorldCon. Easily.)

  20. Sitting in the Hyatt lobby suffering from sticker shock at the price of my supper and vowing that no more food will be purchased from the hotel. Looking forward to the conference, though!

  21. At the Chicon hotel; just finished decorating the Boston in 2020 Christmas Worldcon Bid Party room. Hope to see you there once we open up at 9:30pm!

  22. Wishing I were there instead of sitting at home listening to the wind and rain from Isaac and hoping a big branch doesn’t fall on my roof. This has been going on since last night and will continue until tomorrow morning, probably. Oh well, at least I have electricity, unlike most of my neighbors.

  23. See the third floor corner on the right of the Mies van der Rohe building across from you? I worked there after college. Currently? I’m in DC :) Have fun!

  24. In Philly, working in a freezing cold office, counting down the hours to the 3 day holiday weekend…

  25. Just a few miles away in Evanston. Sad to be missing a con so close, but I am watching my son learn to crawl, so I’m pretty happy to be where I am.

  26. I am in Columbia, MD at a rehab hospital for the 12th day in a road, recovering from bi-lateral knee replacement surgery on the 14th. Next year in San Antonio, I can show you my “Frankenknees.”

  27. Clearwater, F..L..A.. But, I WAS in Chicago just two short weeks ago but couldn’t justify abandoning my kitchen reno any longer. Not even for you, John Scalzi.

  28. Two days ago? In New Orleans, in the dark, listening to Hurricane Isaac reports on the weather radio. Whee! Got the power back this morning–had to see what you were doing, of course. Last time I stay for “only” a category 1 storm.

  29. Hello there, simply was alert to your blog through Google, and located that it is really informative. I am gonna be careful for brussels. I’ll be grateful if you happen to continue this in future. Lots of people can be benefited out of your writing. Cheers!

  30. So John, Neil Gaiman, and the adult components of John’s family were on the way from the Hugo Winners party to another party. I said: “Neil, Master of All Media, now you need to publish a paper on General Relativity or Molecular Biology.”

    Neil: “Why?”

me: “To prove to the fanboys that you can do that too.”

I am just now back from Chicon 7, the 4th Chicon I’ve attended, 4th of the 7 World Science Fiction Conventions held in Chicago.

No con is perfect, but this was as good as any of these 4, which is very good indeed. A full con report will be posted here when I’ve written it. Sorry it’s over — great people, great programming, interesting tales to report of Sanley Schmidt’s farewell party as he stepped down from his decades at the helm of Analog, of Neil Gailman winning his Hugo for a Doctor Who episode, of George R. R. Martin winning his Hugo for Season 1 of Game of Thrones… of my 5 Panel dsicussions…

Chicon 7 was held on August 30 to September 3, 2012

Chicon 7, the 70th World Science Fiction Convention, also known as “Worldcon,” was the premier gathering of authors, artists, fans, dealers, and more in the world science fiction community. Worldcon covers all the genres of written speculative fiction including science fiction, fantasy, horror, slipstream, and alternate history, as well as science, media (movies, television, anime, and online), fanzines, gaming, costuming, filking, and more. More than 5,000 attendees from more than thirty countries attended the five-day event.

I never once checked email or posted on Facebook while in Chicago, so now to catch up…
