New Books, 2/14/14

Here are the new books/ARCs that have come into the Scalzi Compound this week. Did you know that books are the perfect Valentine’s Day gift? It’s true!
What looks good? Share in the comments.
I didn’t know Liz wrote a book! Ooo! *want* (Of course I like the John Sprunk too.)
I’d be interested to read a collection edited by Kij Johnson, now that I’ve read “At the Mouth of the River of Bees.”
‘The Problem with Promises’ and ‘Blood and Iron’ both sound good. And the Nebula Showcase is bound to be a good read :).
Books are indeed a perfect Valentine gift; give a book you love to anyone you’re not sure about. If they hate it, get somebody else for next Valentine’s Day.
Books are the perfect Valentine’s Day gift.
I have The Barrow but haven’t started it. Love Blood and Iron for the title.
My mailbag this week was pretty awesome, heavily loaded towards Tor titles. Out of this batch, I’d already gotten ARCs for The Barrow and Blood and Iron, and very much like the look of both.
Are some of these books the package that got that poor UPS truck stuck in the snow?
Also, I’d be interested in Immortal Muse.
I *completely* misread “Immortal Muse” as “Immortal Mouse”, and now I kind of want to write this story…
@sistercoyote: Must be the font, because that’s how I read it, too.
Also, seeing that this stack has books by both Leigh Evans and Stephen Leigh, made me think of the neighbor on “Home Improvement”, who never showed his whole face. If they could have a Wilson Wilson, why not a Leigh Leigh?
Books are the perfect present for EVERY day.
I’m curious, how many of these advance books do you actually read? And what do you do with them when you’re done?
(You’ve probably already answered this question somewhere on this blog, and I did search, but you have an awful lot of posts!)
Seeing as my wife has a piece in the Nebula Awards Showcase, I’m a little biased here, but that’s definitely the one I’m most interested in. :-)
Proof of what a total nerd I am: I read the title ‘Banished’ as Banish-ed.
I like “in the brake”‘s icon looks like The Green Man by Henry Treece. Haven’t seen that for a few years.
I don’t want to slam design, but the only book that looks like it will stand the test of time on a shelf is the classically inspired design of “Black Moon” which looks like it is from the Fifties, and has “retro chic.” When I see the words “The Blood Guard” it automatically makes me think of author Stephen R. Donaldson, an icon. So unless that text is a WoW serial novel or something, it seems to be derivative twice; as an editor, I wouldn’t do that to one of my authors. The one I would read would be “Nebula Awards Showcase 2014.”
I am seeking to be one of Scalzi’s insects. These are just the opinions of a person who still buys books rather than sells them. I hope I do not sound petty.
I just went and pre-ordered the Nebula Awards Showcase, so I suppose I’m most excited about that. I’ll also probably forget I did it and buy another copy while at WisCon. :)
Ah. I’ve always loved the Artesia RPG as an artifact, full of details about an interesting world, as something to read but that I might never get to play, but could never really get into the graphic novels. I had no idea The Barrow was even happening. Pre-ordered, even though it’s coming out tomorrow.
