View From a Hotel Window, Kansas City Edition + Look! I’m in Rolling Stone!

Kansas City yesterday as we got into town. Today is overcast, so you’re getting the better picture, even if it’s slightly tardy. Today at MidAmeriCon, at 1pm, I’m doing a reading, where I will be reading two (2) pieces no one has ever heard me read before. If you’re at the convention, don’t miss it.

Also, look at this, I’m in Rolling Stone! I’m writing about the new video game, No Man’s Sky. This is my first Rolling Stone byline. I’m a little geeked about it.

  1. Congratulations!

Also, Im enjoying the article. I’m already chuckling to myself just reading the article title and… whatever the name is for the text just below it.

  2. I’ve only been to KC a couple times, but I like that city a lot. I second the WWI museum, but go when you have several hours to explore it. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is also nice.

Get some Boulevard and BBQ while you’re there.

  3. Careful – No Man’s Sky can be like Civilization in that you can quickly jump in to do one small thing, and twenty minutes later it’s five hours later…

  4. Where’s the parking lot/structure? I thought you always requested a room with a view of that?

  5. “Well, we’re big rock singers
    We got golden fingers
And we’re loved everywhere we go
We sing about beauty and we sing about truth
At ten thousand dollars a show
We take all kinds of pills that give us all kind of thrills
But the thrill we’ve never known
Is the thrill that’ll getcha when you get your picture
On the cover of the Rollin’ Stone”
    — Shel Silverstein

(Okay, it isn’t the cover, but the sentiment applies.)

  6. oh no. I hope this doesn’t mean you are a “celebrity” now. The next thing you know you’ll be wearing sunglasses and we’ll have to provide our creds to read the blog.

  7. “Kansas City star, that’s what I are
Yodel-deedle ay-hee, you oughta see my car”

Sorry, JS, just couldn’t make myself stop. I haven’t been to a worldcon, maybe someday it’ll happen. Lucky you.

  8. Hey NotSMOF; I was thinking something similar. The hotel room views are definitely improving. Maybe, just maybe, the hoteliers have become aware of these photo postings and are engaging in something I heard about called “Customer Service”.
I’m sure I’ve heard it said that Kansas is flat – I can’t see no flat.

  9. KiwiSteve, most of metro Kansas City is on the Missouri side of the border. The flat part of Kansas start at least 60 miles westward.

  10. Well you’re a big word slinger, You got golden fingers, and they love you wherever you go.
You write about war and you write about peace, at ten thousand dollars or more.
You got everything that money can buy, and you never have to be alone,
And you keep get’in richer but you can’t get your piture, on the cover of the Rolling Stone.

  11. The reading was awesome, folks. There is some seriously good – well, ok, hilariously good – stuff coming out from Mr. Scalzi in the near future.

My spouse and I are still snortling to each other about the ASL translator trying to keep up with you in the second piece, sir. No spoilers here, but oh, my goodness, that interplay between the two of you was rich. That was the highlight of the day for both of us, and possibly of the convention to date.

  12. I would have loved to have been able to attend the reading, but the room was far too small for the number of people who wanted to hear you.

  13. “Everything’s up to date in Kansas City,
They’ve gone about as far as they can go”

  14. The WWI museum is very nice. There’s a nice little aviation museum at the downtown airport; they have a DC3 that’s being restored, and a Lockheed Constellation and a Martin 404 as well. And the Union Station museum area often has interesting exhibits (right across from the WWI Museum/Liberty Memorial).

  15. Congratulations on the Stones article. I won’t repeat the Dr. Hook “Cover” but it immediately came to mind (I was actually singing it in the shower yesterday for some strange reason).

Alan @ 11:39 thanks for the quotes even though you were just trying to link. I’ve seen most of them but not all together. Inspiring.

  16. I get the feeling you’re going to get really tired of Dr. Hook by the end of next week.
