The Last Emperox a NY Times and USA Today Best Seller

So, there is this:

And also, there is this:

And in case you can’t see that, The Last Emperox is #6 on the New York Times Combined Print & E-Book Fiction Best Seller list, and #14 on the USA Today Best Seller list. The NYT list is looking at new fiction specifically; the USA Today list is all books of any kind. Both of these numbers, I will note, are new highs for me. I will also note that in terms of actual units, Emperox in its first week outsold both The Collapsing Empire and The Consuming Fire in their first weeks, and by a significant margin.

I am, quite obviously, thrilled. And also (and also hopefully equally obviously), so genuinely grateful that so many of you went out of your way to get this book in this last week. The global pandemic, shall we say, did not make it easy for you to get it. Thank you for making the effort to find it.

I am also so very grateful to the folks at Tor, and particularly the PR and Marketing folks (and especially Alexis Saarela, my PR person) for pulling out all the stops to get the word out, which included swapping out an entire physical book tour with an online tour in the space of just a few days. When people ask me “why work with a traditional publisher?” It’s this. This is why. Because working with smart and amazing people makes a difference for getting your book out there.

This is a good day for me. Thank you all for making it that way.

  1. Congratulations! Hopefully the people who bought volume 3 without realizing it will circle back and get 1 and 2 as well. I’m at the very beginning of getting into my audio copy. (Being a mom of teens means that listening to an audiobook sends out invisible “I must be interrupted every five minutes!” signals.) At this point I’ll just note that Wil Wheaton’s delivery really suits the material.

    Mazel Tov!

  3. Scott H. Spencer – Philadelphia, PA – In the second grade I managed to draw a reasonable facsimile of Mickey Mouse’s head. I’ve been hooked on cartooning since. My latest project is a free webcomic, "Chimera Spoor Comix," an experimental, improvised and entirely silly comic.

    Way to go!

  4. Loved every twist and “fuck” in the book, John. I’m glad to be a part of your success.

I should have said this online 17 months ago…The Consuming Fire was the first book I read after my Dad passed away in December 2018, and it was the absolute perfect distraction, Mr. Scalzi. I’m sure you had no idea you were writing that novel for my time of need; nonetheless, thank you.

  5. Congratulations, John! It’s well deserved for a – do excuse the expletive – fucking good book!
I preordered it in January. Sitting here in Germany I already got it on March 31st – any insight into why that would be?
Also, I will make sure to do with this book what I do with all your books. I buy them a second time in audio book format because as so many note Wil Wheaton does a fan-fucking-tastic job with them and really adds to it!

  6. Oh! Somehow I hadn’t realized that The Last Emperox was the third in The Collapsing Empire series; now I need to see if I’ve read the second book (don’t think so) and fix that if I haven’t.

Bravo! And to think, I knew you when you were on misc.writing and just starting to get published!

  8. Excellent! I have just started the whole trilogy – as I understand there was a cliffhanger ending to the first book, I decided to wait till all three were out …. We bought them as they came out, though, so I have had to be Patient!

  9. Awesome sauce! I just finished part 1 last night (yes, I held on to the first two until I had all 3 in my hands)! Can’t wait to finish lunch and get to reading the 2nd book! Had no idea they would be so FUNNY! And fun. And all the other f words we’re learning.

    Well deserved.
You are a great storyteller John.

  11. It is certainly deserved, John. I’m working through my kindle version, and we’re waiting on the hardcopy (signed) from Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh. I must say, time spent reading The Last Emprox leaves me much more mentally healthy and optimistic than time spent reading the news.

  12. Congratulations!

I see that USA Today has given the Emperox a new name. Perhaps they got her confused with another royal family :-)
